Big day, I need my makeup to last

I've got a fancy day out this week.
Makeup will go on at 8am and I'd still like to look half decent at 4pm.
My bag is only small so can't take much to retouch.
I've got Laura Mercier primer and powder and have just bought some Clarins eye base. Happy with YSL foundation.
Do I go a bit heavy on eye make in the knowledge it'll wear off?
Any tips please?

No, you use a primer underneath and spray with a setting spray afterwards. That should do it. I'm a nurse and I haven't time to retouch my makeup (or even look in the mirror tbh). I apply at 6.30am and it has to be OK until tea time.

I find the L'Oréal Infallible spray really makes a difference. You have to shake it like mad, mind.

Thank you, do you use setting spray before or after powder?
Does it go on eyes too?

Setting spray.

ElspethFlashman · 25/05/2019 16:48

So basically you finish your entire makeup EXCEPT mascara. Cos in my experience setting spray, being wet, smudges mascara.

So finish every single other thing incl eyebrows etc, shake like mad and spray, then wait a minute for it to dry (this is when you brush your teeth) then put on mascara. Done!

Well that's so helpful, thank you very much.

Setting spray will help, but it isn't magic. You
should take a bit of make up to touch up. The best settling spray is urban decay all nighter. I've heard good things about elf too, but never used it. It's much cheaper. The foundation is the most likely to shift, so maybe take some bronzer or powder (depending on your complexion) and give your face a dusting and reapply the setting spray. The elf one is small age urban decay do a smaller size on that fits in your bag.

Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray is my recommendation- put it on over my makeup at 10am on my wedding day, and still had a face that looked freshly done at midnight. Absolute godsend! Echo what earlier poster said, spray it on before mascara!

expatinspain · 25/05/2019 16:56

I've also heard that spraying with the setting spray before and after makeup application makes it hold better, but I haven't tried that yet.

When I was at uni in the US all the cheerleaders used to use hairspray (any cheapo one)/and spray the shit out of their faces after finishing their makeup.

I've tried it when I've been a bridesmaid for weddings in very hot places and it works amazingly well, makeup on at 6am and still kooks perfect at 2am after a day partying in 40 degree heat and humidity.

sirmione16 · 25/05/2019 17:05

As a dancer, I've often used hairspray over makeup but obviously not medically advised or recommended

ElspethFlashman · 25/05/2019 17:23

Yes some people use the setting spray as primer but tbh I'm sceptical if that's needed unless you're in Texas. Some people spray it onto a beauty blender to do it that way. Meh. It's a lot of work.

I've used the All Nighter as well (Debenhams have the mini size I think) and the ELF. Tbh the L'Oréal is as good as the All Nighter and not as sticky as the ELF one. All of them are horrible unless you shake the shit out of them.

PeoniesareKing · 30/05/2019 16:20

Reporting back.
I bought the UD all nighter and it's magic.
The first time I tried it I think I was too sparing but on the day did the T & X and it really did work.
Thank you for the help. Thanks
