Do any of you wear these outside the bedroom? They always make me feel self conscious and seem to need constant adjusting.

Asking as I've just spent £80 on two sets and want to get some wear out of them 😄

StarlightLady · 22/05/2019 19:20

I wearing them now.

The answer is fairly regularly (including for work), in spring and autumn. In other words outside of the dreaded opaque tights season but before the bare legged season, and even then sometimes in the evenings.

There is a myth that they are not comfy but that is not true with a good quality belt.

That said, I don’t wear them in the bedroom. l choise them as a practical optio, not for a dressing up game.

Inliverpool1 · 22/05/2019 19:32

Would rather wear hold ups tbh too bulky

StarlightLady · 22/05/2019 19:36

I can’t get on with holdups. For me they don’t (hold up)! Gravity wins! I feel confident with a firm suspender clasp.

FiremanKing · 22/05/2019 19:37

Hardly ever nowadays but all through the mid eighties until the mid nineties I wore them five days a week for work. Charnos was the brand I liked the most. Matching knickers and bra and sometimes a body/teddy.

Completely comfortable and much healthier than tights.

FiremanKing · 22/05/2019 19:40

In fact the best decade for lingerie/underwear was the 1980s. Everything so pretty and flattering.

Riverviews · 22/05/2019 19:48

Yes. Always with long dresses or skirts. They are much more comfortable than hold ups

Fucksandflowers · 22/05/2019 20:19

Do NOT wear them out unless they are an expensive brand specifically designed to be worn as actual lingerie and not bedroom dress up...

Learnt this the hard way early on whilst dating DH with suspenders that constantly snapped off the belt.
Mortifying!
And not at all sexy...

StarlightLady · 22/05/2019 20:45

The problem is cheap tacky sussy belts, hardly fit even for the bedroom and unwarranted sleaze associations have given something elegant a bad name.

Add to that prople who say they have never worn them because they are not comfortable! Sort of another way of saying l’ve never eaten it because l don’t like it.

I was once called by a friend of my sister’s a skirt wearing, stocking wearing feminist. Whatever one of those is!

I don’t think the OP should be self conscious though. I’m sure during a normal working day I don’ give people an eye full of stocking tops. And no, I don’t wear short skirts.

TowerOfJoy · 22/05/2019 23:11

Does anyone have links or suggestions for good suspenders, suitable for all day wear and not just bedroom?

StarlightLady · 23/05/2019 05:30

@TowerOfJoy - Both Fantasie and Freya are very good and I find them practical and comfy for work on a more or less daily basis. They stop put and wash well, I wash my belts regularly at 40 degrees. It is really not very different to putting a bra on when you get dressed in the mornings and second nature once you are used to it. I don’t even think about it.

In short, I would say when shopping avoid a single hook fastening; not reliable and they dig in. I find 3 or 4 hooks the best, it then sits flat on your back, you don’t know your wearing them. And look for a metal clasp. Oh, and avoid one size stockings too; one size fits no-one. John Lewis’ stockings are very good.

Finally avoid anything too fancy with cut away bits, they have a job to do!

A quality belt will convert you for life a poor one is a total nightmare. Oh, and remember, knix over the top, otherwise major probs when you go for a wee!

MoreSlidingDoors · 23/05/2019 09:29

You need staysput. Changed my life!

mermaidbutmytailfelloff · 23/05/2019 14:00

holdups stay up if you generously wipe your thighs by the tops of the stockings with sanitising gel, the kind you would use to sanitise your hands. Works a treat!

I love stockings, need to buy them in multiple pairs though so you can chuck one out if you ladder it.

StarlightLady · 24/05/2019 09:18

I always bulk buy quality stockings (there is a lot of rubbish out there!) when I see them in sales. Shop assistants tend to go overboard When you are oaying forcthem, explaining they are not tights. I once flashed just a glimpse of suspender at the till and said I know.

But having re-read my original post, wearing suspenders does not improve my typing. Grin

CoconutAmericano · 24/05/2019 11:48

Sorry to slightly hijack the thread op but can anyone recommend stockings for taller ladies? I have two decent suspender belts and spent €25 on a pair of stockings that are just not long enough so the clasps are under strain if that makes sense? Id love to wear them out under a dress but the fear of them popping off due to the stockings being pulled so taut terrifies me!

Inliverpool1 · 24/05/2019 16:58

Wolfords. I buy one pair a month and built up a little collection

StarlightLady · 24/05/2019 18:30

Wolford are good. The large size in Charnos also comes up quite long, as do the more expensive Cervin. John Lewis do a medium/large in their own brand but that comes up slighly shorter.

For day to day wear, M&S Autograph do an XL which should cater for most tall women. I think only available on line.

But remember even with less strain, you still need a quality belt to prevent “ping off” in the wrong place at the wrong time!

GraceMarks · 24/05/2019 18:49

I feel like these would be a good way to avoid the dreaded falling-down tights dilemma, or having the top of my tights rolling down over my belly. But can somebody tell me honestly if stockings are actually wearable with fat thighs? Both in terms of getting stockings that won't cut off the circulation in my legs, and in terms of chub rub? I don't give a toss about whether they look sexy on me or not, because I know they won't - I'm just interested in them as a potentially practical option.

CoconutAmericano · 24/05/2019 18:49

Appreciate the replies, I’ll check Wolfords and M&S out so!

HappyMama01 · 24/05/2019 18:55

Can anyone advise about what the chub rub is like as that's honestly the only reason I end up wearing tights!
Would love to invest in wearings stocking full time but am always fearful of the chub rub and chafing

HSKNT · 24/05/2019 19:14

@GraceMarks I'm fat all over not just thighs and I wear them with a High waisted belt

Inliverpool1 · 24/05/2019 19:51

I’m a size 10 and get chub rub it’s not just about fat

StarlightLady · 24/05/2019 22:05

I don’t know about chub rub. I’m size 12/14 (depending!) and with a good belt don’t have problems wearing day to day. I’ve had rubbish belts and that is another story. PM me if you want to discuss spcifics.

saveyourkissesforme · 24/05/2019 23:33

I always buy hold ups and stockings from tights sites online. There are lots of good brands on the main sites and many different colours / styles. Transparenze and Falke are good. I'm quite tall and find the larger sizes stay up well. I find that hold ups are the best for day to day wear as they are so much less fiddly than stockings and suspenders.

Ifonlyiweretaller · 25/05/2019 00:17

@StarlightLady yes to nix over the top. Yet in most magazines / catalogues they photgraph the model with the suspenders over the nix!
