What to wear with a floaty dress while traipsing around London? Converse? Am I too old?

Due to head of to London in a few weeks and hoping the weather stays nice Envy

If it does I’ll be probably be packing a couple of long, floaty dresses. But what to wear on my feet? The footwear has to be comfy enough to withstand walking all day.

I’m in my 40’s and thought about wearing my converse (which I usually wear with jeans) but would I look totally ridiculous wearing them with a dress? I can’t wear those ballet pumps as they fall off my feet and I don’t think they’d be too comfy to wear all day.

Any style tips etc would be most welcome. If not converse then please give me some pointers Grin

I’m glad I’ve posted as you’ve all given me the push to do it so thank you one and all Flowers

I’ll also have a nose at some of the other suggestions.

Sorry, Nuffing. I always say size 9’s, in my head I was meaning more 11+.

DMs!! So comfy once you've broken them in and technically "alternative" so whether they look cool or not with your dresses is irrelevant as they are a statement all by themselves. Well that's what I tell myself, I wear mine with absolutely everything. Converse and dresses definitely fine though, and I think age shouldn't bear any relevance on what you wear especially on your feet!

DontCallMeShitley · 17/05/2019 12:26

Toms. I wear them if I know I will be walking. Many designs, some are like slippers, soft and comfortable, some are canvas.

Toms: shoes and sandals www.toms.co.uk/women

Yup, I wear trainers and frocks (late 40s) a lot, no-one will bat an eyelid. I'm tending towards Supergas rather than converse now as I find them more comfortable although I know they've not got the edge of other brands (but then, neither has the rest of me...)

Winenotttea · 17/05/2019 12:35

Stan Smith’s! I wore mine on holiday recently and was averaging 15000 steps per day with some days over 20000, not a single rub at all, they are supremely comfortable.

TheFaerieQueene · 17/05/2019 12:45

Wear what you like! It is liberating.

I’m going to a BP garden party next week (I’m not bothered but DH is). I’m seriously thinking of wearing my white leather converse with my Vivienne Westwood dress as I’ll be taking tube and walking a fair bit! I probably won’t, but the decision will be made on the day!

If Her Madge has a fit of the vapours, I’ll let you know 🤣

I wear white trainers with everything. Used to wear Stan Smiths but now realise that Superstars are more comfortable for long walks.

If I could afford this spring I'd buy these:

I'd go Toms. I wear mine with everything pretty much all summer. They took no wearing in for me - it was like putting on a pair of slippers.

SpamChaudFroid · 17/05/2019 12:55

I don't think converse are the comfiest of shoes.

If you want comfort, Birkenstocks? Also I just bought these Teva sandals and they could actually be the comfiest thing I've ever worn! (just wear with socks to avoid London dirt feet)

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 17/05/2019 12:55

another Oldie here, 53 and I have loads of converses and rocket dogs that I wear with dresses.

just waiting on a pair of plain black to be delivered so I can use my fancy rainbow laces :o

DorothyZbornak · 17/05/2019 13:05

I wear Stan Smiths with floaty dresses and skirts, but I think Converse would look okay too.
I hate Saltwater sandals personally, but to each their own.

Magissa · 17/05/2019 13:16

I'm in West London. Everyone wears trainers around here. With dresses too. You will be fine in Converse.

StoatofDisarray · 17/05/2019 18:02

ALLBIRDS they are incredible and I wear them all the time. They have all sorts of profiles so you can pick something a bit more delicate looking if you like and they can be thrown into the washing machine on a wool wash and dried overnight and look like new. Plus they're eco sound!

Air and Grace. They're infinitely more cool
and comfortable than converse and look great with floaty dresses.

Leftielefterson · 17/05/2019 18:11

Everyone pretty much wears trainers with dresses so converse, Stan Smith, Vans etc. would look good and they are comfortable too!

DuchessAnnogovia · 17/05/2019 18:13

I wear floaty dresses/skirts with converse hi tops. I'm in my early 50's.

SymbollocksInteractionism · 17/05/2019 18:19

Go for your comfy converse. Life's too short for sore feet. I have them in different colours and wear them with everything.

SweetMarmalade · 17/05/2019 23:31

@TheFaerieQueene almost forgot to reply to you! BP Shock enjoy your day and hope you float amongst the finery all cool in your VW dress (and possible trainers Grin)

Converse will be fine with a dress, perfectly normal attire for traipsing round London.
