What should I wear for a "promotion" interview?

I work for the civil service and in a couple of weeks' time, I have an interview for a job two grades up from where I am at the moment. It's within the same organisation but a different department, and also at a different office to the one I'm based in, so they don't know me, although obviously they'll done some digging and probably spoken to my equivalent there!

Basically, do people think I should dress as if it's a brand new job at a new organisation, or will that look too try-hard? Around the office, people usually wear smart-casual business wear - not jeans, but also not suits. I myself am normally in a skirt and jumper...

Oh, and I will have to wear it for a two-hour train journey to London plus a scramble on the Piccadilly line, so it needs to be practical too! I really need the money, tbh, so definitely don't want to mess this up.

I would go formal, as if it was a brand new job. Being ‘try hard’ definitely isn’t a bad thing at an interview (in my opinion). I think making an effort shows you’re keen and serious about the role.

Regarding the commute? I’d go for a smart dress, blazer and some heels in a bag that I’d put on just before arriving. Good luck!

Good luck!

I'd go in dressed like the manager of the role I want. Depending on your age, I saw some good corporate/boardroom style dresses on another thread from The Fold.

Sorry, should have given age/size details. I'm 40, and somewhat short and rotund. Most of my weight is around my middle and hips. I can't wear heels because of tiresome issues with slipped discs and arthritis.

I think I was tending towards smartening up. I don't have anything especially corporate so it looks like a trip to the shops will be in order.

The Fold are way out of my price range (hence why I need the promotion) but if there's anywhere that does similar styles on the cheap, I'd be interested to know!

Just an update - I've persuaded them to do the interview via Skype, so I only need to look smart from about the waist up! I will invest in a smart shirt...

Excellent - wishing you the best of luck.
