WTF is “business casual”?

The dress code for my course this week is “business casual.” What does that even mean?

I don’t normally have to wear anything particularly smart for work (non-scruffy jeans and trainers is totally normal attire in my workplace). I do have some quite formal business clothes (the sort of thing you’d wear in court), but nothing much in between.

Getting to/from the course is going to involve a lot of walking (probably 4 miles in total), so I’d like to avoid wearing heels if at all possible (is this possible?)

As someone above said, I'd do black jeans, blouse and loafers or navy chinos and a smart t-shirt/shell top. Or a jersey dress with loafers and a cardi

DH suggests chinos and a shirt, but (a) I suspect that only works for men; and (b) I don’t actually have any chinos.

I have spent the last 20 years trying to work out what the girl equivalent of chinos and a gingham shirt is.

I work in a very small profession. So I will probably bump into the people on the course again.

I think I’ll go for the jersey dress and a cardi. I need to look and see if I have any flat shoes that will work, if not I’ll take heels to change into.

Thanks everyone!

The dress is a great choice!
I would never wear jeans no matter how smart if business casual is specified. Smart casual then jeans are allowable but absolutely not for business casual.

The jersey dress with flats would fit the bill. No need for heels.

Dress for the first day, and smart jeans and top afterwards.

It's a training course! I really wouldn't worry too much. Dress is gorgeous and very smart.

The dress is perfect.

I'd wear something more colourful than navy, then you'll stand out amongst all those blue shirts. I accidentally packed all vibrant colours for a conference and everyone knew who I was...

Another one in love with the dress. Beautiful.
