So, I'm early 40s, but started going grey in my early 20s. I started dyeing it just for fun, and am now stuck in the rut of panicking about my awful roots and resenting dyeing it. I do it at home, and choose a dark brown that matches my eyebrows. I'm getting to an age where I think I need to change things up. I see many contemporaries with vividly coloured hair that just doesn't look natural. And if they are between appointments, there is serious rootage. I love them, but it looks wrong.

The roots that come through make me think that I'd be pretty grey if I left it, but the thought of leaving it to grow out is awful. My hair is quite long.

What can I do? Would it be helpful to go to a salon to get them to colour my hair to make me growing out my roots less noticeable? I'm on a quite tight budget, so don't want to commit to lots of salon appointments.

How dark is the brown? Could you break it up
With some high and low lights to deflect the grey a bit? You will have upkeep but it might be just 4 times per year.
