Least painful type of high heels?

Argh help me. I have to wear high heels for the first time in nearly three years (okay, fine, I probably haven’t worn heel reguarly for a decade).

What style is least painful? Going out in London so there will be walking and tubing involvement, if I could just get in a cab it would be fine.

Would a sandal work? These are super comfortable

Thank so much everyone!

This is the dress (assuming when it arrives today I don’t look hideous in it, generally wrap dresses work well for me, slightly nervous about the sleeves and the length being too long for me, but then since I had children I can’t wear anything on or above the knee because as soon I bend over slightly I flash my bum (I’m generally wondering how people taller than I am manage to wear any of the dresses I own without getting arrested and I never buy really short dresses). I guess it’s just a change in body shape because it never used to happen!

Anyway, I’d rather have it a bit too long than flash the chefs 😂

It does make me worry slightly about covering too much of my feet / legs as this may look weird. I ordered some low black boots at the same time as the dress to try them out when it arrives which I think will give me an idea of what I should try. I have found a pair of black patent block heel Mary Janes from M&S which I’ve only worn out once, to a job interview where I had to walk to and from the train station. They look so sturdy and comfy, and yet I badly went over on my ankle on the way there, and was in so much pain on the way back that I went into a charity shop and bought some hideous rubber flip flops to get home in 😂

I love some of the shoe boots posted here that are more open but my fear is that they really are too high for me to comfortably walk in. And I really need to avoid peep toe as I don’t have time to do the essential toe maintenance for such a thing! I’d love some shoe boot things that are a bit lower and with cut away areas but closed toes

In terms of budget, I really can’t justify spending hundreds given that I might wear them again once around August and then probably not again until the next year! On the other hand I know cheap shoes hurt more!

I’ll have a look at the M&S and Next comfort ranges and see if any speak to me (oh to be young and steel-footed again!)

Ooh those look nice - very manageable heel size I think. Will add them to my shortlist 😁

You would also get loads more wear out I'd something like that.

fancynancyclancy · 11/05/2019 08:04

what about a shoe boot like this?

Topshop are a good high street option

For some reason I can’t get the office links to work!
I think these look great but kitten heels are apparently bad 😂

Have you looked at Mod Shoes, some good block heels there.

DinosApple · 11/05/2019 08:27

I find Ruby Shops really comfortable to wear (I'm in flat black steel toed boots for work most of the time).

Mostly they are quite patterned, but there are a few plainer black styles in their current range.

How about these www.clarks.co.uk/c/Dalia-Leah/p/26139304 Clark's shoes. I have a couple of similar pairs. They feel elegant but are very comfortable and the T-bar keeps your foot strapped in which makes them easy to walk in.

fancynancyclancy · 11/05/2019 08:50

I think kitten heels can work sometimes it just depends on the style of shoe. I prefer the higher version Office do but not sure if it’s too high for you.

fancynancyclancy · 11/05/2019 08:52

How old are you op (if you don’t mind me asking)? Dare I say that a lot of the options on here are very frumpy. Granted not the stripper style platforms!

Saz432 · 11/05/2019 09:28

I’m 36. I know, most shoes that aren’t excruciating are quite frumpy! Very annoying

What about cone heels - more comfy than skinnier heels?

I’m mid 30s too. nothing wrong with that shoe boot you linked too but a little bit heavy for this time of year. Comfort isn’t just the height & shape of the heel it’s the bottom front part of the sole. I’ve had block heeled 2” shoes that have hurt a lot more than high thin heeled ones.

cookiechomper · 11/05/2019 10:00

Ones where there's a platform heel on the front of the shoe. It stops that rubbing pain on the ball of the foot.

fancynancyclancy · 11/05/2019 10:16

that can help but some shoes particularly cheaper ones have very hard soles. I find leather is much more comfortable.

Bloomburger · 11/05/2019 10:46

I think the shoes pictured first up thread look cheap and the Wallis ones are dreadful. You'd expect a grandma to wear those with thick polyester trousers and a nice blouse to a pub for Sunday lunch.

High shoe boots or the ones pictured that just had one strap across would look nice with that dress and balance out the proportions.

It's so definitely not a block heel or Mary Jane dress too.

Bloomburger · 11/05/2019 10:51

Dune did a take of the Valentino studded she a couple of years ago which would look nice with that dress

here which would look a bit edgy but still be comfortable and easy to walk in and more age appropriate. You're young, be edgy and different. That dress can take it.

DameFanny · 11/05/2019 12:04

fancyNancy I think it's the length of the shoe - you'd need an exact fit or else your foot is wavering between heel and toe and having to work hard to stay in place - where if the hell comes under the foot there's more inherent stability. But if you're a size 5 or under it won't be as noticeable - and if you've got skinny get (I don't) you're less likely to have extra length to be moving around in. Does that make sense?

fancynancyclancy · 11/05/2019 12:10

I don’t know & not sure on the size theory as i’m a 5.5 - 6. As i’ve said those SW ones I have are very comfortable & I’ve worn brand new Manolo Blahniks for more than 12 hours & not had sore feet. But they both have lots of padding under the sole & ankle straps really help with stability. My Manolos don’t have ankle straps but there is a piece of elastic (?) on the back to help hold the heel in.

CountFosco · 11/05/2019 14:09

OP I'd just wear a flat shoe. London isn't dressy and a white trainer will look cooler with that dress than uncomfortable heels you aren't used to. Have a look on the enbrogue blog for inspiration.

howwudufeel · 11/05/2019 14:13

Clarks make the most comfortable heels. They are the only heels I can cope with. I have never tried Hotter shoes but apparently they are very good too.

Saz432 · 11/05/2019 16:53

Shaherazad that would be amazing - I would absolutely love to try some out, I’d be a good case study as I never wear heels any more due to the discomfort. I’m a size 5 :)

I know London overall isn’t overly dressy but this place (Le Gavroche) definitely is (and I realise that wearing a sub £40 dress there may be a very bad idea - will see when I try it on, I just liked the style and I’m hoping it won’t look too cheap). My suspicion is that every woman will be wearing heels. I would love to wear flats but I don’t want to stand out for the wrong reasons, and being short and dumpy I know I would look much better (in the dress and general) in heels if I can find some I can manage.
