Can you clean Birkenstocks?

Absolutely adore my birks but the insoles seem to get so grubby- any tips to freshen them up?

I don't know (scrub in soapy water?) but can I put in a plea here for people wearing open sandals of any kind to wash them occasionally. People don't seem to appreciate that they go around spreading manky foot smells; I'm sure they're washing their actual feet, just not their shoes and it seems worse if they're a cork or similar base.

I’ve put mine in the washing machine - in a pillow case, on a gentle cycle - several times and they’ve been fine
