What is modal? Is it a fabric to be avoided? Does it make you sweat?

I would avoid it. Haven't worn it as I didn't like the feel of it.
It is a bit like rayon and viscose.

tobee · 05/05/2019 13:52

I'm fine with modal. Not fine with viscose, rayon, nylon.

I like modal.

It can come out of the washing machine a bit like cardboard but it always softens up again.

I avoid viscose and rayon though.

bumpertobumper · 05/05/2019 14:26

Modal is a type of rayon; rayon and viscose are basically the same thing, although there are different types/grades.
They are all fabric made from wood pulp, classified as semi-synthetic cos of the processing involved in production.

Now much more common as cotton more expensive then it used to be.

Bamboo clothes come under this umbrella.

Personally i find these fabrics fine, not sweaty like nylon/polyester, but prefer cotton.

What about in underwear? Best to avoid or ok?

I quite like Modal, I had some Tshirts and long sleeved tops from Matalan and they felt silky and had nice drape as they were a bit weighter.

No sweatiness and I'm a menopausal 52yo Blush

Modal is a brand name for a type of viscose fabric. Apparently it's made only from beech wood, no other wood.

No fabric makes you sweat Wink you're body does that on its own, but different fabrics deal with the sweat differently. Viscose fabrics are similar to cotton in how they deal with sweat - they're quite airy but get quite wet, IYSWIM.

Modal is a brand name for a type of viscose fabric

But viscose and rayon shrink ( or they do when I wash them) and modal doesn't. Confused

Didn't realise it was a brand name.

I think Lyocell is the name for modal in USA?

banivani · 05/05/2019 17:43

Well I don't know the exact magics of it all Grin. In general I find that knitted viscose fabrics (jersey fabrics) don't shrink the way woven fabrics do but I don't know why ... I googled lyocell and it's considered different from traditional viscose while still being a "subcategory". Tencel is a brand name of lyocell. Lyocell is made differently, something about when the solvent is added. I haven't been able to see if modal is fundamentally a lyocell fabric (read: I cba to google in depth).

I like modal. It's very soft and I find it quite flattering, skims over lumps and bumps in a good way.

youllhavehadyourtea · 05/05/2019 18:35

I am always drawn to modal clothes. It's like heavy matte silk and takes a softer dye, and so I always find it suits me.
