I had a nice time with a personal shopper this week, but as usual got a little carried away and came home with too many stripy tops! Please help me decide which to return? Here’s what I got:

(Jigsaw having 30% off sale atm)

  • navy linen relaxed trousers (Jigsaw)
  • navy side zip jeggings (Mint Velvet)
  • navy and white stripy fit and flare knee length dress (Hobbs)
  • red and white stripy long sleeve top with button detail at the back (Jigsaw)
  • white linen T-shirt with thin khaki stripes (Jigsaw)
  • dark teal stripy 3/4 T-shirt (Jigsaw)
  • dark khaki short sleeve button up blouse (Mint Velvet)

I’m also questioning 2 navy trousers (although the jeggings are comfy and might do for going out for dinner etc?)

I’m so clueless - my wardrobe is a shambles!
If helpful, I’m newly 41, dark hair, pale skin, blue eyes, kinda pear-shaped.
Thank you!

So 4 tops, 2 trousers? Tbh it doesn't sound like too much, particularly if your wardrobe is depleted. If you had to cull, I'd lose the Khaki stripe one, but that's probably a personal preference - most khaki is pretty shit on me. Does it suit your colouring?

It's really hard to say without seeing them on you

Floisme · 03/05/2019 13:23

I think it really depends on what's already in your wardrobe e.g. whether you've already got 6 pairs of navy trousers. But I agree with champion that what you've listed doesn't sound that excessive in itself. The trousers are different in style and it sounds as if everything would work together.

But if you can't afford all of it then personally I'd keep the tops and trousers and ditch the dress. I know a lot of posters love them but, in terms of value for money, I don't think dresses pull their weight. I don't find them versatile, they rarely fit me properly and they're always in the wash so they wear out faster. But that's me!

Gosh OP that's hard without seeing them, or seeing them on you. I wouldn't keep anything that I had just bought if my thoughts on it a few days later were already that it 'might do' for something at some point. Do you go out for dinner often? What do you generally like to wear, are dresses the norm for you or is that also for an occasion that doesn't exist yet, say.

Off the top of that list perhaps return a pair of the navy trousers and the khaki top but would have to see it tbh!

If you don't want to or can't do photos or links I'd return anything that didnt make you feel great or doesn't slot in with your favourite existing items. Eg: do you have footwear that works with the trousers, if you love those. Just because the personal stylist pulled items that fitted or are comfy and go together doesn't mean you have to get them or keep them; there are plenty of clothes in the world Smile

If you like them all, keep them all!
Was this joh Lewis, I use the personal shopper there a lot

Thanks for the feedback! It’s not a massive haul, but I feel overly stripy. And I’ve tried them on again think the khaki ones and the dress facing returns. Good point re not needing to buy or keep everything just because she said so (although I am easily sold to 🙄) I’ll try attach the dress photo 😬 I’d wear Different shoes though!
The shopping was done at a Fenwick store.

Lovely dress. I love fenwicks!

TabbyStar · 03/05/2019 15:18

The dress is really nice and from what I can see it's v flattering. I wear dresses like that a lot, I might buy it now!

I think the other things it depends what you have to wear them with, I'd do some outfit pairing and decide on that basis what to keep.

championquartz · 03/05/2019 15:20

Hmm. I suppose it depends on your lifestyle. The dress is nice but if your wardrobe is mainly at home, - housework and childcare - I find dresses hard to work in. I get way more done in jeans/trousers and tops. What kind of wear would you get out of the dress?

I think Flo has it. The rest of your haul will all work together quite well, making it very good value.

NiteFlights · 03/05/2019 15:22

It all sounds sensible and the dress looks very good on you. If it was me I think I’d lose the khaki blouse but i wouldn’t worry about the stripes - they’re classic. If you like both trouser styles keep both, they sound versatile.
