How religiously do you follow expiry dates for your various cosmetics?

I'm rooting through my make-up bag at the moment and it seems pretty much everything bar a lipstick I bought last week will need binning. It's taken me bloody forever to find decent products - right colour - right coverage - at quite a cost so I'm reluctant to part with it all.

I can honestly say I've never even thought to look at the expiry dates on cosmetics. Nail polishes can go gloopy over time so I'd bin them but everything else I'll keep until it's used up. I don't really believe a powder eyeshadow can go off.

AsleepAllDay · 30/04/2019 15:06

I didn't, but this led me to developing perioral dermatitis, which is an ongoing and annoying hassle

I make sure to throw out mascara by six months, they're pretty much dried up by then anyway

tierraJ · 30/04/2019 16:18

I do keep to expiry dates especially on products containing spf.

aposterhasnoname · 30/04/2019 16:20

Cosmetics have expiry dates!? Shock

BlueMerchant · 30/04/2019 16:21

I don't. I use them until it's obvious they have gone 'funny' ie gloopy or dry. Luckily I've had no problems with skin or eyes.

TattiePants · 30/04/2019 16:42

I still have some Chanel and Laura Mercier make up from my wedding. I got married in 2005!

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 30/04/2019 16:44

I do for mascaras, foundations and anything else cream or liquid but not for powders.

WhatHaveIFound · 30/04/2019 16:49

I have done ever since i 'burnt' my skin with out of date suncream. It triggered lifelong allergies Sad

ilovecherries · 30/04/2019 16:50

For mascara and sunscreen only. Foundations I use unless they start to smell odd (only happened once). Powders I use without any thought. I DO wash brushes and sponges regularly though.

BaronessBomburst · 30/04/2019 16:51

I throw away anything that smells funny.

SrSteveOskowski · 30/04/2019 17:29

Suncream is probably the only thing I replace regularly. Nail polish when it goes gloopy and mascara when it starts to dry up, but I can't say I pay attention to expiry dates as such.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 30/04/2019 17:30

I change my mascara about every 3 months, everything else use til it runs out

FadedRed · 30/04/2019 17:35

I didn’t know cosmetics had expiry dates Blush

hippermiddleton · 30/04/2019 17:35

suncream I buy fresh every summer, mascara I try to throw out within 6 months of opening, foundation I try to use up within the use-by date (ie, no 'saving for best'), nail varnishes I bin when gloopy.

Everything else tends to linger till I read a feature somewhere about the superbugs lurking in 3 year old eyeshadows, or I realise that I've owned a lipstick longer than I've known my DH.

Oblomov19 · 30/04/2019 17:37

Never even looked at an expiry date!

trendingorange · 30/04/2019 18:20

Grin never! Think I still have stuff I wore while at uni

EmmaC78 · 30/04/2019 18:25

I also never knew they had expiry dates.

deadsexy · 30/04/2019 19:58

Not one bit

SallieSallow · 30/04/2019 20:36

Skincare and SPF I’m meticulous with as I’ve had irritation/itching from ‘off’ products before. I’m a bit of a makeup collector/hoarder so have a purge every now and again of stuff I’m not using regularly, but if I’m still using and liking it then I’ll carry on unless the look, smell, texture/consistency changes or it stops working properly. I wear foundation and mascara every day so they get used up well before they go off.

BusySittingDown · 30/04/2019 20:43

Everything seems to run out anyway for me as I use most things daily except for eyeshadow.

I am, however, using a body shop blusher that I've had for a few years. It was a "baked to last" one and it certainly has! I use it everyday and it only occurred to me the other day that I bought it before my summer holiday in 2016 Blush.

I've ordered a new blusher but I'm not sure if I'll like the colour as much. I don't think they make the one I have anymore.

managedmis · 30/04/2019 21:24

Don't think I've ever checked them

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 30/04/2019 21:30

There is a symbol on of a pot with a lid half off and a number of months,e.g 6 =replace after been open 6 months etc

orangejuiced · 30/04/2019 21:38

No, it would be a waste. I wash my brushes but mascara is the only thing I'd bin after a few months

billybagpuss · 30/04/2019 21:41

They have expiry dates? well I never.

I don't use much make up but tend to buy quality stuff in the hope of some longevity, however it seems to evaporate and I'm sure the DD's wouldn't dream of......

greenlynx · 30/04/2019 21:43

I religiously follow expiry dates on everything.
