I have never worn jeans

Because they look awful on me.
I am short (around 5.1" I think), carrying a few extra pounds but not what you would call fat fat. I am a size 10. I don't look good in flat shoes but otherwise I look sort of okay once dressed, sometimes even nice. I am 49 years old.
So!
I would like a pair of jeans that are soft to wear with blouses and t-shirts and chunky platform sandals, ankle length, not too dark but definitely not faded. I once bought the famous Hush boyfriend jeans that everyone was raving about and they looked bloody awful on me.
High wasted and skinny won't be a good thing, but anything baggy will be even worse. I am curvy, pear shaped I guess; I carry most of my (extra) weight on my thighs.
Is there any hope?

NYDJ are great. I can also recommend Free People :-)

chin you're slimmer than me, but similar height and age.
I just bought two pairs of jeans in Primark. Slightly stretchy, and just on/past the ankle
I had to try on about 20 pairs until I found the right fit for me, but I wear them all the time.

I don't ever wear Jeans I have in the past I would not wear them often so would never spend much on them I prefer skirts and dresses
I'm short and curvy too but if jeans fit my hips they are too big around waist I do not like belts they rub on CS scar and dig in, I last wore jeans as a student
I find getting any sort of trousers to fit properly almost impossible
I do not like things too tight so I never wear leggings except as an alternative to tights with knee length dress
I hate skinnies they would make me look like a parsnip, ripped jeans look awful on everyone
I do not want to wear any item of clothing that fits like the paper on the wall showing every curve wobble etc

I've recently discovered Asda's wonderfit jeans and they're fab. Really comfy and look good on. They come in a short length which is slightly too short for me at 5'3, so may well be about right for you :)

There is no need to wear jeans, even if you find the perfect cut in the perfect weight of denim they are rarely actively flattering on anyone

Don't even bother looking unless you can get petite sizes. What's your budget?

I'm 5'2" and a size 20. My current jeans are from ASOS (Petite), M&S (petite), Hush (not petite, gappy at the back), Boden (petite), TKMaxx (not petite, gappy at the back).

Remember thst the images we see lengthen the legs of already tall and low weight children so a short middle aged woman who is a healthy weight will never look like a model. Doesn't mean you can't look good.

That would be a size 10 not 20!
