That age old question... Pixie cuts (for not someone not too young or thin)

JoyceDivision · 24/04/2019 19:42

Blush

So, here I am, sat with my 12 month + hair growth just past my ears, wispy, thin, meh and DD,last year of primary and with shortish hair, announced she wants a pixie crop this week at hairdressers (she'll rock it, has the style and elfin features)

I have spent half if my life with pixie cuts, but, being camera shy I'm hardly in any pictures to refer back to when deciding what to do with my hair.

So, do pixies look ok on short ample mid 40s, or am I going to look, basically, like a bloke?

Tried Google searching this but the results were mind boggling!

Honestly ? You’ll look like a man imo. I’ve known a few people get them and it’s looked bloody awful, make up almost seemed to make it worse just didn’t look right

Mademybed123 · 24/04/2019 20:04

Lol do it. I had one and loved it. For some reason have grown my hair out

JoyceDivision · 24/04/2019 20:07

Honesty is what I wanted Grin

I grew mine out when I heard a clients small child refer to me as That Man.
Sadly due to hair loss, I'm about to get it cut short again

Aldicheckoutworkout · 24/04/2019 20:12

One of my friends has one. I have known her for 9 years and i think she is early 50s,(although looks much younger) it looks fabulous and she doesnt look anything like a man! It is much more maintenance than a longer style though.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 24/04/2019 22:13

Put bluntly, how pretty are you? I think that women with beautiful faces can take it but otherwise pixies can make you look like those older women who have had their hair cut for practicality rather than style.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 24/04/2019 22:17

joyce

Im nearly 50, women love my hair and i get compliments on a regular basis, I'm no longer slim but i do have a narrow face

I have it cut every 4 weeks and thats it Smile

I might have a photo...I'll see it i can find it

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 24/04/2019 22:19

Found it, it was taken a while back but wrinkles are hidden under the red scribble Grin

JoyceDivision · 24/04/2019 22:20

Rufus you look amazing!

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 24/04/2019 22:26

Thank you joyce

I think its because i have a narrow face...doesnt get too plump (cept under my chin! Or shoukd i say chins)

You could always have a consultation with a hairdresser, they are normally quite good as seeing if a style would suit

PinkieTuscadero · 24/04/2019 22:39

I don't think it's necessarily something that only the slim and/or gorgeous can carry off. Pixies fail when they're too apologetic. You need to go for a stylish pixie and avoid the sensible mum crop.

ApplestheHare · 24/04/2019 22:40

They are awful unless you are young and have a very pretty, thin/elfin face. Everyone else looks like a bloke or like they spend a lot of time convincing themselves it's liberating. On older women they always strike me as a marker of someone who's lost their sense of self but is pretending otherwise.

In other words... don't do it! Can you get a bit more of a blunt cut and focus on making sure yours is in brilliant condition instead? That would be much more flatteringSmile

JoyceDivision · 24/04/2019 22:41

Thanks, my hairdresser is fab, but he loves short hair so is biased, even when I started growing it he would chirrup "You need to go short to go.long"... I'm waiting to see how DD goes and if I end going for it

I think the people saying pixie cuts are ‘awful’ are in denial. I think most women do in fact look better with short hair.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 24/04/2019 22:43

Oh well thats not helpful joyce Grin

My hairdresser was the same, kept telling me to go short

Yohoahoy · 24/04/2019 22:51

Honestly I think so much depends on how a haircut makes you feel. Mine's very short (think Carol from the Walking Dead). I m neither young, nor slim.

I feel great when it's short. I have no idea if in reality I look like a man, an older woman who's given up hope or an elderly schoolboy.

But I do get compliments, and I think it's because when you feel good you carry yourself differently. If you feel good you smile more, show more confidence etc.

I think Pinkie has it right regarding 'apologetic failure.'

So I'm firmly in the 'do it' camp.

Yours looks fab, btw, Rufus :)

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 24/04/2019 23:12

RUFus you look ace 🙂

Go for it OP. RATHER A COOL PIXIE than a tedious mum bob or pedestrian spaniel’s EArs offering.

MOST women can pull off short hair if they have a messy, cool style.

CountFosco · 24/04/2019 23:19

I don't know about most but certainly a lot more than currently have pixies. OP do it, you've had them before for a reason!

Annasgirl · 24/04/2019 23:19

Rufus

You look fab.

My DM was a hairdresser and always said most people look better with short hair - she really disliked long "drab" hair as she said. And I think she was right, unless you spend hours and hours on your hair, short is best and you will always look groomed.

I cut mine from past my shoulders to an angled short bob last summer and I cannot believe the compliments I get. And I love it - I realised that I had to stop having a hairstyle for how I thought I looked and actually needed a hairstyle for how I actually looked - and how my hair was. My hair looks fab and healthy and thick and luscious this length but once it gets to just above my shoulder it goes to straw. I had ignored the straw - even my teen DD now says, please mum don't ever change your hair from this!!!!

So go for it. You can always grow it out if you need to.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 24/04/2019 23:33

The problem with ‘pixie cuts’ when older is that your face and neck are so exposed! there is no softness or ‘blurring of the edges’, if you have a bit of a turkey neck, slightly sagging jawline, well the pixie is not going to do you any favours I’m afraid, if you do go ahead please don’t go for the jazzy earrings and funky glasses combo, it’s something you often see when someone has a drastic pixie, I think they feel naked without hair.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 25/04/2019 07:28

Thank you very much yoho, paul and anna

Although i agree to a certain extent with betty re jawline and neck i did have a slight sag and turkey neck

But no one noticed and i get an equal amount of compliments...i dont have pierced ears so im safe there Grin

I do have friends with softening jaw lines and double chins and turkey necks as its just age (and weight) but their hair doesn't disguise it...although they do have lovely hair

MaryLennoxsScowl · 25/04/2019 07:29

A friend’s mum had her hair chopped from dry, nondescript shoulder length to a pixie crop when she must have been late 40s, and I have never forgotten how amazing she suddenly looked - younger and prettier and so stylish.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 25/04/2019 07:30

And in fact those of my friends who dont have bobs quite often put their hair up...so their faces are just as exposed

MissLadyM · 25/04/2019 07:37

I think you look lovely! You've got a slim face & defined jaw

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 25/04/2019 07:39

Thank you miss

That picture is a few years old and ive never really had a very good neck

But it always looks better in photos Grin
