That age old question... Pixie cuts (for not someone not too young or thin)

JoyceDivision · 24/04/2019 19:42

Blush

So, here I am, sat with my 12 month + hair growth just past my ears, wispy, thin, meh and DD,last year of primary and with shortish hair, announced she wants a pixie crop this week at hairdressers (she'll rock it, has the style and elfin features)

I have spent half if my life with pixie cuts, but, being camera shy I'm hardly in any pictures to refer back to when deciding what to do with my hair.

So, do pixies look ok on short ample mid 40s, or am I going to look, basically, like a bloke?

Tried Google searching this but the results were mind boggling!

I ended up getting a bob recently, a bit by accident . Now I’m thinking pixie , after this thread . I have deep set eyes . Mid 40s . What about if neck is maybe too thin ?

VixenAbroad · 25/04/2019 10:11

I really don’t see how hair will disguise a “sagging jawline” unless you literally brush it over your face like a curtain...

evilharpy · 25/04/2019 10:21

Unless I wake up one morning miraculously looking like Audrey Tatou I'll be keeping my long hair till I die. I think very few people actually suit a pixie cut. You need to have lovely, delicate features and great bone structure and I have neither of these.

Girasole02 · 25/04/2019 10:23

Refer to femme d'un certain age on Instagram. She's amazing

millythepink · 25/04/2019 10:52

I've had one since I turned 40 and have always loved it, even my surly BIL felt compelled to admire it. But, I do have small features and a long neck which helps and somehow it seems to have given me cheekbones!

Texture is absolutely key though, it needs to be feathered around your face and you need height at the crown. You also need a creme wax to give it definition.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 25/04/2019 15:07

I never said hair would disguise a sagging neck vixen I said it would soften the edges, with a pixie cut your face, neck and jawline are totally exposed that’s all.

OnlineAlienator · 25/04/2019 15:11

I just wanted to post that i love the vocab here - tedious mumbob (spend my life fighting the mumbob), and pedestrian spaniels ears - thats me! D'oh

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 25/04/2019 15:14

Yes when your hair is up you are exposed but I still think it’s a much softer look than a pixie, especially if it’s a messy bun with tendrils etc, but I agree the Croydon face lift scraped back hair look will be just as exposing as a pixie.

CremeEgg2019 · 25/04/2019 15:28

When people talk about the mumbob and spaniels ears, what hairstyles are they talking about? Some pictures would be really helpful..

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 25/04/2019 15:32

betty as i said i do get your point

My friends dont really do tendrils...though one of them has awesome long wavy hair

Mine is very straight and fine so looks heaps better short, just lies there like a dead thing thats been ironed otherwise Grin

IdaBWells · 25/04/2019 15:42

I was diagnosed with lymphoma (cancer) in my bones last summer. I finished chemo last October and now have a pixie by default. Up till then always had longish hair with no fringe etc. I am 50. Never in a million years would I have chosen to have my hair this short and would also assume I would look awful.

Well I absolutely love it! And am always getting compliments, the vast majority from people who either don't know me or had no idea I had cancer. I also am not particularly overweight but I'm not slim either. Have a mum bod. Yet people keep telling me I look "edgy" Grin. I have changed my style and wear more soft blazers with t-shirts.

I am afraid I also am breaking the rules as had my ears pierced in January and now wear hoops and my reading glasses are light blue!!! I do color my hair to not look boring and so it is blonde.

FlorenceLyons · 25/04/2019 17:20

I think the pp who said pixie cuts need to not be apologetic is spot-on. I have a very short pixie, and have it cut religiously every five weeks. If I let it go any longer than that it starts to look a bit dull and frumpy.

If you don't fancy super short, then I'd try something else with a bit of an edge - a bit of an undercut, or short back and sides with a longer, messier top. Something deliberately styled, in other words.

Branleuse · 25/04/2019 17:28

i think it looks ace on your shaped face. Lucky. I cant get away with it anymore.

Carriefrompreston · 25/04/2019 17:29

I am following this thread....I have booked an appointment to have mine cut short next Thursday...........Spaniels ears......that is exactly how I feel!! I will post a question about my hair too once I've seen some styles I like.

millythepink · 25/04/2019 21:43

Unless your longish hair is luxuriantly thick, glossy and a striking shade then I don't think long, or medium length hair is attractive to look at and it doesn't flatter.

I think a properly shaped cut that frames your face is much more flattering.

Langrish · 25/04/2019 21:46

You’ve got just the right shaped face. Make the most of it (before your jawline goes south 😫). I looked lovely with it at 25. Would look like an escaped convict I suspect now.

Laska2Meryls · 25/04/2019 21:58

Here's mine... aged 61
I have a squarish jawline .. have it cut ever 5 weeks ..colour it myself, I am quite grey

JoyceDivision · 25/04/2019 23:22

Laska that looks cool, love the cut and colour

laska

What joyce said

Looks great

Laska2Meryls · 26/04/2019 07:55

Thanks, I love short hair but you do have to commit to regular cuts.. I book in for just a wet cut though, and it's £20!! Was lucky though, I tried a few people to get it right, and found someone great at just a local small hairdresser. My last hairdresser at a smart salon was charging double..

Laska2Meryls · 26/04/2019 08:05

The colour is just this one.. I love it!

buggerthebotox · 26/04/2019 08:07

I also think most women look better with short hair. Long hair drags a face down imho. Especially when older.

I've got a messy pixie (not through choice really; my hair simply won't do anything else) which is longer on top (3.5 ins) and shorter at the back.

I'm 59 with small features. I've never suited long hair, mainly because it so flat and dead but also because I kind of disappear.

You DO need to pay attention to the rest of you though imho. So makeup and an otherwise stylish vibe!

Keep it choppy and edgy and go rock it, OP!

buggerthebotox · 26/04/2019 08:09

I sometimes cut mine myself. Otherwise I get a dry cut for a tenner.

LunaTheCat · 26/04/2019 08:13

Ida you have been through so much💐 . I bet you look stunning!

iN33danap · 26/04/2019 08:24

I think you should! I am a very tall and broad and fat woman (but I own that) and had short/shaved hair for years. My shorter and larger mother also did. O had many people ask me about my "boy hair' or outright saying they didn't like it bloody rude
But, I liked it I felt good so I went with it. Happy I did and if you want to you should to!! Smile
