So I'm 40, and attending a grad ball full of Millennials...what do I wear?!

I retrained and am now in a graduate role. I know you might think I'm delusional, but most people in my cohort don't think I'm 40. (I'm also Asian, so that helps)

Now we have a grad ball, and I really don't know what to wear. What do people wear to balls these days? What colour? It's going to be a winter ball. I don't want to stick out like a sore thumb.

I'm cool-toned, top-heavy, 5'8", size 14, with a round face, chubby cheeks, fair skin, and typical Asian features.

Suggestions please?

I actually like what she's wearing -- is this black tie appropriate? Maybe in a different colour- will black be too heavy?

Yup, the Maya is the look I am going for. I just am partial to two piece so it's more modern, hence the tulle skirt and sequin top.

I also have the top in black, and ordered a black tulle skirt. But I'm afraid it might look kinda witchy?

It really depends on the people who will be at the event. If this is some kind of law society event or something you’ll need to wear a nice black tie dress. Reid’s has some good ones for example. But if it’s a work place event it may be more casual.

Student 'balls' now are not really balls, it's just a dance where they get drunk but not in trainers for once. They won't be wearing prom style dresses or anything overly fancy. It'll be any little nice dress they can find from missguided, so don't over do it OP.

We’re already working though so technically not students.

Right now my choices are: sequin top (silver or black) + tulle skirt (dusty lilac or black — or should I buy gray?), or the sequin top dress.

Tulle skirt came. Now thinking maybe I should wear a plain black crop top instead?
