What colour highlights should I get? (pics)

So I have booked to get a half head of highlights. I was thinking to get them faded in so I can let them either grow out without looking terrible or take a good while before needing to top them up.

I am undecided what look to go for. Would blonde highlights or brown lowlights look better? How light/dark should I go? Should I get them all over or in just one bit?

Pics are natural hair colour and current, asymmetrical cut. Very bright! Have never had highlights or dyed hair before.

Please help seasoned MNetters!

Really sorry the images are refusing to load.

I have natural ginger, short hair which is longer on one side.

If your hair is ginger then avoid anything that is warm blonde as it will go brassy. Best to go for ash toned highlights.

Why not book an appointment with your hairdresser first & discuss it with them? Sorry that seems unhelpful but if you've got a great hairdresser who understands colour and knows you then they will be best to advise you.

If you've never had colour or highlights before then most salons would need to see you first & do an allergy test too.

Sounds like you'd be happier with balayage which can blend in with your existing colour?

Trying again.

Don't highlight or change your colour... it is fabulous and colour that deep..would be a shame to change it. I'd pay a lot of money for your natural colour!

MollysLips · 16/04/2019 20:09

I've got hair exactly like yours, in colour and texture, and I've tried highlighting it 3 times and it always looks rubbish! Blonde just doesn't work. It goes brassy, or yellowish, or just stands out weirdly.

I realise it's boring just having the same colour year in/year out, but I've never found a decent alternative.

However I'll be watching your thread with great interest in case someone has the perfect solution!

Ellapaella · 16/04/2019 20:13

I honestly wouldn't do anything - I think you have a fabulous natural hair colour. Highlighting and bleaching will just ruin your lovely hair in the end!
If you want to avoid damaging your hair but are really keen on adding something then maybe some low lights woven in.

ElektraUnchained · 16/04/2019 20:26

I'm happy to do it as an experiment considering its short and anything crap will grow out easily enough. It grows fast! I suppose I could also put another colour over a blonde that goes wrong.

If I was to do lowlights, would a dark purple work do you think?

Ah sorry OP I missed that your hair was shorter so definitely no balayage.

I'd pay to have my hair coloured like yours, it's stunning.

MollysLips · 16/04/2019 21:25

I can't imagine dark purple lowlights looking nicer than your hair looks naturally. But I'm happy to be proved wrong!

MollysLips · 16/04/2019 21:28

I think I've been proven wrong... this looks good:

Thanks for all the compliments! I do really like my hair colour. Its really fine and at its longest was below my arse which made it look really thin at the top! Looks much better short and gives me the chance to experiment. Even though its nice, it is a little dull having the same colour all the time!

Love that purple one Mollyslips posted!

Ellapaella · 17/04/2019 08:00

That picture molly posted is really nice but that model looks like she's got a base brunette colour.
Some pics below of ginger hair with a mixture of highlights and lowlights woven in, really jut to add a bit of texture. Looks nice and could work for you op.
