Good shampoo for very itchy flaky scalp

I’ve always used Neutrogena but found it’s not as effective these days and my hair never looks in good condition.

My scalp can not only flake but scab/bleed.

At the moment I’m using a goats milk shampoo brand I bought from a Christmas market (several colleagues had recommended their cream and soap for excema/dry skin so I was buying my mum some of that) and my scalp hasn’t itched or bled at all from it but I have a shower of ugly dandruff every day.

‘Head and shoulders clinically proven solutions’, it’s the one that contains selenium.

Body Shop Ginger anti dandruff, its amazing for dry scalps. Thoroughly recommend and strangely it's never included in their offers, shop assistant told me it's because it is their best selling product.

I tried all sorts to help my flaky scabby head - milk shampoo/t gel/ eucerin/ginger. Nothing worked.

I swapped to Lush shampoo bars - and with a few weeks I saw a massive improvement.

T gel medicated shampoo

BluebellMay · 16/04/2019 00:20

I also recommend The Body Shop Ginger shampoo and conditioner

BillywigSting · 16/04/2019 00:21

Head and shoulders or vosene. I prefer head and shoulders because I think it smells nicer

Tardigrade001 · 16/04/2019 06:59

Nizoral. It's actually a medicinal shampoo, not something to use on a day-to-day basis. It should clear it after 3 or 4 times.

jcq17 · 16/04/2019 07:09

Nizoral is very good

thesunwillout · 16/04/2019 07:14

There's a Philip Kingsley one that my friend swears by, it is £££ but she had very bad thick crusts in her scalp and it helped alot.

falcon5 · 16/04/2019 07:17

Hopes relief really helped my husband. We got it online from big green smile.

lotusbell · 16/04/2019 07:20

I dont have flakes but I get one persistent itchy patch of scalp, I think it's the sebaceous dermatitis thingie. I used the small clinically proven H&S shampoo, there are 2 and I cant remember which one as they both seem to do the same. Anyway, it definitely helped but it stinks. I think they have coal tar in them. If you haven't already, go sulphate free, that should help. The Body Shop ginger one is good too.

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 16/04/2019 07:21

I use the dandruff shampoo made by La Roche Posay. It has worked beautifully and is so nice on my hair. Can't remember the exact name sorry, but the only make one as far as I know.

alittlepieceofme · 16/04/2019 07:22

Capasal medicated shampoo, it's amazing! I get it from the doctors

SpringLake · 16/04/2019 07:23

T gel is great stuff, only need it once or twice to restore order (I use sparingly after using normal shampoo, and leave it for a few mins), then save the rest for another time. Often months between.

My DD suffered with itchy dry scalp for years. Think it's caused by an allergy to some ingredients in most shampoos. Finally found the Love Beauty & Planet shampoos and conditioners - no silicons, parabens or colourants. Her scalp cleared up immediately Smile

The Body Shop ginger shampoo changed my life!

ScrambledSmegs · 16/04/2019 08:09

I've switched to an SLS free shampoo for every day and a salicylic acid or salt scrub treatment weekly. Seems to be working well. I've got the selenium H&S in case of flare ups but so far, so good.

Also, a poster on here recommended a water softening filter attachment for the shower. Has been amazing and nowhere near as expensive as a full system for the house. I do live in a very hard water area though.

Another vote for the Body Shop ginger shampoo and conditioner. Its fabSmile

PuppyMonkey · 16/04/2019 08:23

I have to use Phillip Kingsley itchy flaky scalp - it’s amazing but so expensive. I tried the legendary Body Shop ginger shampoo and it doesn’t work for me, my scalp was sore again after a few weeks.Sad

I have scalp psoriasis so I’ve tried them all over the last 40 years. Most products work for a few months then stop and I have to go onto something else. The PK one has been working for about four years now, so that’s a definite record.Grin

Alphosyl comes second but I can never find that now. T-gel is good for a week or two. Nizoral doesn’t work for me. Vosene is probably the best cheap alternative.

Groovee · 16/04/2019 08:31

I use tgel then get Uno from Sally's.

Comefromaway · 16/04/2019 09:31

T gel is the one I’ve always used. It’s good for my scalp but makes my hair look lank.

I’ve read you are not supposed to use it all the time long term and I used it for 20 years!

Another body shop ginger shampoo fan here.

Richlyfruited · 16/04/2019 10:53

My DH suffers with this and he either uses the Body Shop ginger shampoo or 'Yes to Carrots' shampoo which is excellent.

LillithsFamiliar · 16/04/2019 10:55

I have no suggestions. I'm just looking for ideas Smile
