Please help me style DD for prom.

DD (16) has her prom coming up in the next few months.

We've found a dress she loves that looks beautiful on her. But I'm out of touch with style and she's sporty so doesn't wear makeup or obsess over how she looks.

So we need your help to figure out the following:
What colour shoes and accessories would go well with this dress?
Also what would you recommend as a hairstyle? She's tall, with pale skin and thick long straight gold/brown hair. She would prefer a secure complete up do than one that will require checking/fixing throughout the evening.

As the dress has an open back what can she use instead of a bra? She has tried it on without a bra but she would be happier if she had some kind of support.

Here's a link to The dress

Looking at that link, the sequins look quite dark, almost black. In real life they're not, they're more dark red.
She tried black shoes on with the dress but they didn't look right. Neither did silver. We tried rose gold but weren't sure about them either.
I'm sure those in the know would take one look and know immediately what would work best.

Beautiful dress!
To be honest, I would've said black shoes & bag but if you've tried black on already and think it didn't look right 🙈
How about nude coloured shoes? Will the shoes be on show a lot as it doesn't look like it on the model?

Does she want her make up done? I know you can go into House of Fraser and go to one of the concession stands and they'll do it for you, otherwise it'll be Googling for a make up artist who can come to your home (some of them do hair too).

For hair, an up do style would look lovely with the open back, I would suggest again Googling up do hairstyles on images and picking one she likes and finding a hair dressers that will do it (personally I would pay and have it done before her prom day to make sure she likes it and the hairdressers can do it properly 😅 then book again on the day of her prom).

Accessories/jewellery wise, I would keep to a minimum as it's such a statement dress and you want to keep the focus on that. Maybe a pretty delicate silver bracelet and if she has her hair up a pair of earrings like on the model or studs?

I've used these things for backless dresses,
bust lift tape

You can get similar on Amazon/eBay. They're much better than any other type of stick on bra in my experience! Really secure and completely unnoticeable with a dress with a neckline as high as that. Might be worth watching a video of how to apply first... Depends on bust size though, I have medium/small boobs.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 13/04/2019 10:35

A nude shoe would look lovely and then I'd match the lips to the dress.

AnyoneButAnton · 13/04/2019 10:36

I think nude shoes are your best option actually - or dark red if you happen to find them.

HoraceCope · 13/04/2019 10:37

with shoes remind her that she probably wont want too high a heel

AnyoneButAnton · 13/04/2019 10:40

Definitely go shopping for shoes in person rather than online and walk around the shop a zillion times and have a bit of a dance before buying.

MooMinCow · 13/04/2019 12:00

You could go for the ‘barely there’ strappy sandal that seems to be very in right now. Topshop even in black it wouldn’t be too ‘in your face).

MBM18 · 13/04/2019 14:25

Sorry, missed off about a bra also. Google stick on strapless bras and see if she'll be happy in one of them.
I wore one years ago and remember it coming a bit unstuck when I got hot though 🙈

Comefromaway · 13/04/2019 14:35

My daughter nearly bought a dress from Quiz that exact colour last year but in the end went for a black and silver one.

She’d have worn black shoes (suede looked better than normal leather) and she had her hair long and loose but her dress had a back in it.

Lifeaback · 13/04/2019 17:27

What a gorgeous dress! In terms of bra, I’ve found the stick on bras from misguided to be the strongest sticking ones and they are backless. Could you maybe order a few cheap ones online from different places so she can trial them and decide which one is best?

Will she be getting her hair and makeup done? If so, what about something like this www.pinterest.cl/pin/492862752966959959/

Loads of lovely inspiration pictures on Pinterest which she can show to a hairdresser

I knew you lot would be of help- thank you.

So we've found some shoes she can walk in, her natural preference would be trainers but she needs a bit of heel because the dress is sooo long (despite her height). But these are very pretty on her feet and mostly hidden by the dress, as some of you pointed out.

Thanks for the alternate bra suggestions, we'll explore those options.

Ah I'm so excited for her, with a large hint of "my little girl is now a beautiful young woman I'm so proud of for so many reasons". But I'll try to contain that cos tears will just mess up her whole look. 😉

Will be booking to have her hair and possibly make up done. I'll be led by her and what she wants. She is working hard for her exams so I feel she deserves to have the opportunity to feel glammed up. Thankfully she has not entertained the idea of hair highlights or fake tan etc that so many others seem to be going for. There is a limit to the budget as a lone parent.

Thanks for your ideas-very helpful.

Dd2 is naturally sporty and wore sequin trainers for prom

Comefromaway · 13/04/2019 19:31

Those dresses are very long though. Dd is quite short and needed quite a heel.

UCOinanOCG · 13/04/2019 19:53

What a beautiful dress. A fake tan would look terrible with it. It needs porcelain, pale skin and a glam up do. Keep the make up minimal. She will look amazing.

Russell19 · 13/04/2019 21:25

I agree with PP no fake tan, that dress would really suit paler skin. Love the shoes you have chosen, is there a bag to match? She needs hair up with that dress 100%. What about a kind of braid all around the head almost like a crown? Do you know the type I mean?

frugalkitty · 13/04/2019 21:55

I did something similar for DD when she left primary. Stayed put even after she'd been hanging upside down on the monkey bars afterwards Grin
