I went shopping today and saw a couple of lovely dresses in the shop but couldn't make head or tail of the sizing, it all seemed to be USA 0 to 4 which is UK 2 to 4. The clothes didn't look that tiny but I was too embarrassed to ask

For the conversation from US to Uk you just add 4. So a size 4 is an 8.

It's a shop - the people are employed to answer those exact questions. Alternatively, grab a bunch and head to the changing rooms? Life is for living OP don't be so frightened!

I think it might be continental sizing. 1,2,3,4 = S,M,L XL.

Surely they look like this - with US and European.

US 0 = UK 4
US 4 = UK 8
US 6 = UK 10
US 8 = UK 12
US 10 = UK 14

Eur 34 = UK 6
Eur 36 = UK 8
Eur 38 = UK 10
Eur 40 = UK 12
Eur 42 = UK 14

All shops fit slightly different anyway - so worth considering you might need 1 above or 1 below anyway.
