Hair dye and stinging

I recently had brown dye on my hair (done by a hairdresser). My scalp felt tender and sore that evening, increasingmy so, so I took antihistamine and washed my hair again. The next day it felt much better. I wonder if this is just a sensitivity or the start of an allergy. Does anyone have any experience of this? I don’t feel like it’s a good idea to dye it again.

They should have done a patch test before, usually a couple days in advance to test if it would be ok, did they?

Some people are sensitive to dyes, doesn't mean you cant have it done again but probably not with that product without some pain.

Did you have a patch test done first?

I use home dye , I have sometimes had stinging while it was on my head, not afterwards though.

I think the darker dyes are more likely to cause irritation ( something like indigo dye / )

Sounds like you have a sensitivity to PPD. I'd be very wary of using any brown hair dyes in future if I were you. Catastrophizing a bit here but there have been cases of people dying from PPD allergy even though they'd previously dyed their hair many times without any adverse reaction.

I had this last couple of times I’ve had my hair bleached and dyed.
I made sure I used soothing shampoos after the last time it happened and it was fine the next time I was dyed. Garnier Oat one in the white bottle is good.

No allergy test. When I do it myself I do one, this was a hairdresser who came to me and for some reason it didn’t cross my mind!

Calloway -I’m actually worried about that, I tend to catastrophise about this sort of thing.

Mine started doing that... first a tiny tickle, then a mild sting, then..the last time I dyed it.. it stung quite a bit. That was brown colour and that's when I decided to go cold turkey and stop colouring.

When I spoke to my hairdresser she said it was wide to stop as it could have progressed to the sort of allergic reaction you see in the Daily Fail.

Yeah I'm now streaked with grey, but I have got used to it :)

I always take a antihistamine the night after dying my hair.
If I still felt itchy and stingy then I would get it checked or stop dying.

Hair dye is pretty irritating to my vie so some degree of irritation is to be accepted. If not stopped by anti h or carried on more than 24 hours then it's time to rethink
