Has anyone found a good replacement for that fab selenium orange L'Oréal anti dandruff shampoo?

L'Oréal made the BEST shampoo ever ,it was in a dark blue bottle, then they re branded it to Men's anti dandruff shampoo and it was in a black bottle with an orange lid.

Then they discontinued itHmm

I emailed them ages ago and they have no plans to rebrand or replace it.

The fuckers Angry

I bought loads and had a secret hoard that the rest if the family were not allowed to touch but I'm down to my last half a bottle.

Head and Shoulders with argan oil was a good replacement for a bit as was TBS ginger shampoo buyy recently I've been getting flaky/itchy again and I washed my hair this morning with some shampoo from my secret stash and honestly my hair looks and feels fabulous. No flakes, no itch, just nice shiny swishy hair.

I stood in Boots for ages looking at shampoos and have bought some of the Loreal clay stuff but not holding out much hope tbh.

There was also a Boots own make sensitive range with a sensitive scalp lotion as well as shampoo and conditioner, anyone used that?

I could weep, I had a crap scalp for 25 years and L'Oréal was perfect Sad

Any suggestions?

If L’Oreal works for you, have you tried their Phytoclear anti-dandruff shampoo? It’s in a dark green bottle. My DH uses it and rates it, it’s not very widely available but larger branches of Superdrug usually have it (and it is on offer at the moment).

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/04/2019 12:52

I think I tried that phytoclear stuff, I don't get on with silicone free shampoo usually, I have mad hair which needs silicones and lots of the things people seen to try and avoid Grin I'll give it another go though

I’m exactly the same OP. I seem to tolerate L’Oreal (even their ordinary shampoo) better than most other brands. I did find a Head & Shoulders with selenium (which seems to be the magic ingredient).

Also Philip Kingsley, although very expensive, worked before (it was very similar to the original L’Oreal)

Oh and I assume you’ve tried Nizoral? You say cradle cap but I suspect it’s seborrheic dermatitis. It’s basically the same thing. Nizoral is what my dermatologist suggested washing my face with!

Fazackerley · 04/04/2019 14:20

Nizoral shampoo clears my itchy scalp then I can use any shampoo I like for a few weeks after.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/04/2019 15:05

You say cradle cap I didn't but doesn't matterSmile itchy more than anything and then it gets dry and flaky especially on my hair line.

One wash with discontinued L'Oréal and it's gone.

I've tried Nizoral, its ok, bit harsh iirc.

Head and shoulders clinical stuff, I used some of that and it's nearly right, same colour as the Loreal stuff but maybe I need to continue to use it.

I can't even look at the PK stuff,it's so expensive!

Drink I've just googled and think you're right about it being SD.

I loved that L'Oreal shampoo, and still can't find anything as good. Head and Shoulders with Argan works while I'm using it, but the orange stuff worked long term letting me use other stuff

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/04/2019 15:28

CMOT yes,me too Sad

In fact I think this recent flare up was because of going to the hairdresser's. Wouldn't have been an issue with the Loreal stuff , thinking back I only used it twice a week ish. Sigh...

My DS has seborrheic dermatitis and uses a shampoo he gets on prescription twice a week (think its nizoral?) And then the other 5 days he has started to use Head and Shoulders charcoal mens shampoo. He used to use the l'oreal one with selenium too, and finds the charcoal one is the only one his skin can tolerate. May be worth a try? It smells quite nice too.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/04/2019 15:31

I'll have a look for the charcoal one, thank you Smile

dame so sorry! Kids just home from school so a bit bonkers and I read ‘crap scalp’ as ‘cradle cap’!

Nizoral is harsh, I don’t use it anymore myself but as an emergency ‘I’m going to shave my head’ it’s good to know as a backup!

I’ve just been reading a thread about using MCT oil on the scalp but I’ve literally just heard of this (I was looking up something) else but it’s something I’m going to look into because it sounds good.

handmademitlove · 04/04/2019 15:34

I have found success with palmers cocoa butter shampoo - currently using cocoa and peppermint which smells like after eights 😂

Applesbananaspears · 04/04/2019 15:50

I can’t believe that they discontinued it. I can’t find anything which is even close to being as effective. It’s a real problem. Why on earth did they discontinue it ?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/04/2019 15:51

Googling suggestions, thank you Flowers

"Yes to Carrots" is good, not quite as good as selenium shampoo, but definitely better than most! The head and shoulders selenium one is good too.
I didn't realise the loreal one has been discontinued, that's why I can't find it anywhere!

yongnian · 04/04/2019 16:02

I used to get Selsun on prescription but have been told it’s currently unavailable...was given head and shoulders clinical with selenium and to my surprise, it works just as well.
Selsun had previously been the only thing that has ever not irritated my scalp beyond belief.

MrsFrisbyMouse · 04/04/2019 17:20

davines natural tech purifying shampoo is fabulous (r was the only shampoo to ever stop my flakes) - it's expensive, but if you look around you can get 1000ml bottles cheaper. You also don't need to use it that often. I use it every 1/2 weeks, and then use the L'Oréal phytoclear in between. So the big bottle last me a long time.

DPotter · 04/04/2019 17:31

I also liked the L'Oreal orange, Selsun and Lenium shampoos. Why did they stop making them. So many people I know miss them. The Phyto one isn't as good and I find the Head and Shoulders one too weak for my scalp and it doesn't work well with my thick hair. Nizoral doesn't touch the problem at all.
Years ago L'Oreal used to do a beautiful clear dark blue shampoo - best Ev-er. Really annoys me when company's stop making my favourite make of something.
Currently using TGel Coal tar - not as good as the L'Oreal orange and def not as good as Selsun or Lenium but better than others currently available.

Juicyfrooty · 04/04/2019 17:37

They discontinued my favourite elvive conditioner too, the smooth intense one in the orange bottle. Nothing calms my mop down like it, I'm going to be gutted when my stash runs out.

lhw92 · 04/04/2019 17:46

Same!!

Also selsun is discontinued 😩
Selenium sulfide is the only active ingredient that got rid of my dandruff

I’ve recently been using Alpecin’s dandruff killer, definitely not as effective as Loreal’s discontinued one but it’s better than the other dandruff shampoo’s I’ve tried

I’ve now just had to accept the dandruff, and I make sure to never itch my head in case the flakes fall Blush

Thedarklady · 04/04/2019 17:47

Charles Worthington scalp tonic or similar products. Not specifically for dandruff but does clear all flakes and dryness.

lhw92 · 04/04/2019 17:52

I’ve just been reading a thread about using MCT oil on the scalp but I’ve literally just heard of this (I was looking up something) else but it’s something I’m going to look into because it sounds good.

Please could you link the thread? I’m interested to hear about this

MCT oil can’t be metabolised by malassezia (harmless commensal yeast which causes dandruff) but I didn’t think it would have any antifungal properties, plus wouldn’t it make your hair really greasy 🤔

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/04/2019 18:36

Lots of Selsun on line.
