Help me dress like an adult

I've been lurking around for a little while and have spotted lots for great advice being given so I thought I'd put out my own request for assistance!

I am rapidly approaching 40 and am seriously in need of a style makeover. I am very laid back/low maintenence in style. I have a job in which there is no point in dressing up so I tend to wear the same type of things all week. I live in skinny jeans and plain tops or knitwear. I am almost always in uggs or converse. I love a good hoody. Basically I still dress much like I did as a student but really feel like I need to grow up.

I am also quite self-conscious about making big changes or seeming like I'm trying too hard. I'm looking for ideas about how to shake myself up a bit without feeling like I'm dressed as someone else. I'm size 10-12, 5'7 with with quite a long body and shorter than average legs. Any advice gratefully received.

What do you want to achieve?
Who’s look do you like, who do you think looks good and well put together?
Many stores offer a stylist service, would you go for a session?
I’d say stick to what you’re comfortable in with a few tweaks
Eg skinny jeans with a Breton tshirt, or a crisp white shirt
Different foot wear eg anke boots, cowboy boot, coloured trainer eg silver
Denim skinny jeans,or white or coloured jeans
Replace hoodie with a hooded knit cardigan
