Blonde highlights to....?

I’ve had blonde highlights for a few years. I’d like to change to balayage. Should I grow the highlights out as much as possible first? And would ombré be a better option? Thanks.

I've been having blonde highlights for around 5 years to blend my greys.... and now I can't get rid of them! They come straight back through even the hairdresser permanent colour, and the only thing I'm able to do is grow them out. My hair is like straw on top with dark brown and grey underneath.... wish I'd never had the flipping things!!

Yes, mine is now damaged which is why I thought balayage might be a better longer term option.

Balayage looks much better than ombre and I think will be easier to transition highlights into (instead of going from highlights to ombre.)

A good hairdresser will probably do something called a 'shadow root' which darkens the highlights/hair at the root which I believe will cover old highlights/ makes regrowth not a problem.

In that case I'd go for lots of conditioning masks (I'm using Phillip Kingsley elasticizer once a week) and I'm using purple shampoo to tone the highlights down as mine are very brassy to add insult to injury.

I've been growing mine out for 3 months and they've grown out by around 2" so it's a slow process..................

Thanks both. I’ll grow them out as far as I can bear it Smile

What do you want your hair to look like though? Less blonde at the roots? More root shadow?

Balayage is a technique not a look.... the outcome can look v similar to foil highlights as per photo.
