What does "toned" mean to you?

I see this word used a lot on MN. I don't know what it means.

How does someone know if they are 'toned'? What does the word mean, how to tell which of these women (in pics) is most toned, what do you see that makes the difference? Is it skinny, visible muscle definition in the limbs, a 6 pack, "smooth wrinkle free skin", lack of cellulite, lack of fat, lack of boobs.. what is it you're looking for to define "toned".

On which parts of the body does one find evidence of being 'toned'?

You have to work for it.

Raspberrytruffle · 16/03/2019 20:29

Toned means to me no bum bag belly or overhang from my c-section. Toned means not having a spongebob square pants style bum or mum bum as my dd calls it Wine

ScafellPoke · 16/03/2019 20:37

Sponge bob square pants bum?

ScafellPoke · 16/03/2019 20:40

The one on the right, although bigger, is toned

I’m sure the op meant well but this thread is a bit horrible. We wouldn’t post pictures of fat people and discuss who we thought was obese.

As I said previously I’m skinny but wobbly. I go to the gym,I walk lots and I swim but due to chronic illness I can’t do any high impact or weight work so I’ve never seen any difference in tone.

Let’s just all be thankful to have bodies that function.

Milomonster · 16/03/2019 20:54

I’m skinny too but no amount of workouts gives me muscle definition on arms or legs.

ScafellPoke · 16/03/2019 20:55

Yes but hughes nobody aspires to be obese. Many people want to be toned, so it’s good to know what to look for

ScafellPoke · 16/03/2019 20:57

I find workouts boring milo I ride my mountain bike lots, walk up hills lots and go climbing

Hughes12345 · 16/03/2019 20:57

ScafellPoke then let’s just see the bodies that people aspire to then not ‘here’s one photo of someone toned compared to another of someone with a tiny bit of cellulite’

ScafellPoke · 16/03/2019 21:37

It’s a comparison hughes not sure why you’re so offended? Maybe just stop reading the thread?

countdowntonap · 16/03/2019 21:45

Pic 1 and 3 in the op are certainly not toned, too much body fat. This is toned to me, second woman being pregnant.

I don’t need to stop reading the thread, thanks for the suggestion. I’m expressing my opinion. I take offence to any persons body being referred to as ‘yuck’ (and I’m aware you didn’t post that but you responded to my comment about that post).

lljkk · 16/03/2019 22:16

Ah... so some differences of opinion have emerged, which is interesting.
Most people are talking about toned = clear muscle definition, especially in the limbs.

BUT, some folk are implying there can be too much muscle definition which means something not toned I guess. Or just "too toned" (sorry about the pun).

Else, that 'toned' = lean and smooth (which doesn't imply any muscle definition at all).

I asked ecosia & google for "toned woman" & mostly the images were of women with clear muscle definition, typically doing something sporty. A few images were simply skinny or curvy-not-fat women (see examples). Some of the other examples posted by others, I don't really see muscle definition.

I reckon I'd need to get my BMI down < 20 to ever be 'toned'. I don't mind that I'll never achieve it. Was just curious what people meant when they use the word.

I responded to the fact that you didn’t like the topic of talking about toned bodies. I don’t see the issue with comparing bodies people aspire to with bodies simialr to what they have, whether that be obese or thin.

countdowntonap · 16/03/2019 22:35

My body fat isn’t below 20% (I don’t think) but I’m not far off ‘toned’.

I would be very happy to be slim, not bothered about being toned at all. People often can't tell the difference anyway. When I was slim, lots of people thought I was fit as well, which I definitely wasn't.
