Dare I go grey??!!

Ok, I'm 53 and originally had dark brown hair but to keep it that way I've been dying it since my early twenties. I'm really tempted to stop dying but am quite worried about it too!! :-0 My natural hair colour now is white - would that look awful? Do I just get it dyed white or should I go for grey highlights? Any recommendations please?

i agree with a PP - bleach it all and tone to silver to grow it out. I did that last year and it grew out beautifully.

42 - totally grey, but not white enough for my liking. I left it grey for about 6 months and then bleached it silver again as i felt a bit drab.

Deffo need a strong lippy Grin

Do it !!! I grew mine out at 49 from black dye and have never been happier or had so many compliments. I've got olive skin ( Italian family) and was hugely worried about how it would be but it's wonderful. It's actually a huge movement at the moment and gathering momentum all the time. There are lots of Facebook groups dedicated to it .

Thanks @ShakeYourTailFeathers and have you had good feedback about your hair? Do you find the condition a lot better?

Hi, my Mum started getting grey hair in her 20’s and had dyed it dark brown until around 4-6 months ago. She decided as she turned 45 that she was getting fed up of dying it dark and the grey/white hair coming through so fast so decided to gradually go lighter until the brunette grows/gets cut out. There’s only around an inch or two of brunette left now, the rest is a nice blonde which she said she’ll keep for a while then make the transition to grey. I think I’ll look really great when she does. She gets quite a lot of compliments on her hair now, it looks really nice and is less maintenance!
I’d say go for it! Lighten it or just grow it out. I personally love grey/white hair, I think it looks lovely.

Thank you @WinterRose92 :-)

@elQuintoConyo, you look beautiful. Your hair is stunning.

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 15/03/2019 15:45

I had loads of compliments when it was first bleached. Not so much when it was grey. It was a bit steely. Condition was lovely when not dyed. Short like yours, so it doesn't really matter Grin

I'll give it a few years and see if it's got any whiter.

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 15/03/2019 15:45

Quinto's is a lovely colour - wish mine was that colour Envy

Sicario · 15/03/2019 15:47

Oh my god. You must have read my mind. I was thinking about this just this morning. It's a dilemma...

UatuTheWatcher · 15/03/2019 16:12

I'm 53 and growing my grey through. My hair is down to my waist and a mixture of whit, grey, blonde and a darker blonde under colour. I've just had about 6 inches chopped off to tidy it up as I haven't been to the hairdressers in I don't know how long. The freedom from not colouring is fabulous.

This is a brilliant FB group for support

That really is a beautiful colour Quinto's I see you have an ever so slightly darker hair shade right at the very front which seems to blend in seamlessly. I'm super dark at the very front edge so mine doesnt blend in at all and adds to the current 'pigeon poo on head meets badger' look big time Hmm

I'm growing out my black hair dye at the moment..my hair is nice and short and so far almost white at the sides with a badger stripe of grey/white growth on top..I'm really excited to see what it looks like when done...I will be 49 this year and quite frankly just couldn't be bothered any more...I fully intend to be a funky grey older woman!

Im growing mine out. I have very short hair and have bleached and toned it. There is about an inch of white/grey roots.
I shaved the back and sides a few weeks ago but there was a really big difference between them and the still dyed top so I put a semi on the sides.
I thought it would fade away completely but instead left them a horrible wishy washy brown colour.
Ive had shave it off again.
This is from about 3 years ago when I grew it out then stupidly dyed it again.
Im 50 now.

Oh I can't wait to have it done now!! It's far too dark now for my skin tone but if I put on a lighter brown dye it just goes ginger which doesn't suit me at all!! :-0

That’s why I gave up. I’ve been using a Josh Wood Cool Shot with conditioning mask to tone down the orange. I was dyeing my hair because it was orangey rather than for any other reason.

StillMedusa · 15/03/2019 23:49

51 here and stopped colouring 3 years ago.
I'll never colour it again. Mine's salt and pepper with white at the front, and while some days I feel old, my hair is in such good condition, and the lack of having to colour, no more roots poking through...is so freeing!

I grew it for a few months, then cut it shortish and currently it's shoulder length. (about to cut it again tho as I'm bored). Since I 'went grey' several of my work colleagues have also taken the plunge!

ILikeyourHairyHands · 15/03/2019 23:50

Yes! Go grey. I always pop on these threads as an advocate.

I don't even think a good haircut is necessary. I did, but then I let mine do its thing.

I love it.

This is mine (needless to say I'm the old lady on the right :D )
