We have been invited to a private dining event at an extremely posh Michelin-starred restaurant. We used to love going to places like this but now have toddler twins and can’t see us normally being able to do this sort of thing again for many years. We’ve miraculously managed to arrange childcare (only been out twice for dinner since they were born) and now I’m thinking about what to wear. I need a new outfit as I’m a totally different size and shape to before kids.

I’m only 5’2”, have a large mum tum and chunky thighs (although my calves are still reasonably slim so could get those out!). Hate my arms. Also have scarring on my upper back so would prefer that was covered and need to wear a bra. Now a size 14 in most places. Used to be hourglass but probably more pear shaped these days. I’m 36 if that makes any difference.

I haven’t had to buy anything formal since before I was pregnant and I have no idea what I’m doing. Just want to look nice and not my usual dowdy mum self!

Have you had a look at the Ghost website? They do some lovely tea dresses in slinky fabrics which skim rather than cling, are bra-friendly and have sleeves, but are definitely formal enough for a smart restaurant. Something like the Orla dress? (Obviously depends on budget...)

Thank you, I will have a look! Happy to spend a bit, since this is probably our only chance at such a lovely night out in a very long time!

Can you get to a John Lewis - book in with their personal shopping service. Doesn't cost anything, no pressure to buy and they know their stock inside out.

I did it for a big event and was very impressed.

I would go to a personal shopper as well. Would be worth it for a big event!

Possibly - nearest one is an hour away or so but would be worth a trip :)

I'd go for a shift dress, it will not cling to your tummy or bum but will show off your legs. Pair with nice heels and jewelry.
Comfortable and glamorous.
