Essie ballet slipper - any good?

I'm a bit sick of my current collection of nude nail polishes, and would like to buy a new one.

I have my eye on Essie Ballet Slipper - if it's good enough for the queen, surely it's good enough for me?

Do people rate it?

It’s very very pale, I’m going to get the next ‘pink’ up from it I’m afraid I’ve found it too colourless.

Palominoo · 12/03/2019 21:45

Too pale for me also. Go go geisha is a bit deeper.

catinboots99 · 12/03/2019 21:46

Yeah it's almost clear

FiaMarrow · 12/03/2019 21:52

Essie Mademoiselle is a nice pale pink

cornflakes5 · 12/03/2019 21:52

Oh really? It looks so dark in the pic!

I prefer "Topless and Barefoot", it's a bit darker and matches my skin much better. It's not as greige as the pictures appear, but not as pink as Ballet Slippers either

Gentlemanwiththistledownhair · 12/03/2019 22:05

Also if you're ever looking for a dark pinkish nude, Eternal Optimist is also gorgeous

Moanymoaner123 · 12/03/2019 22:07

Ballet slippers takes about 5 coats before it is a solid colour, it is very sheer otherwise and can look patchy/streaky. There is a more peachy shade called 'worth the wait' which is better coverage

LaurieFairyCake · 12/03/2019 22:16

I think it's too dark Confused

Much prefer the complete neutrality of Chanel 'Ballerina'

cornflakes5 · 13/03/2019 06:31

Thanks everyone. I hear you all, ballet slippers is too sheer. I am fair-ish East Asian, to give a sense of my skin tone. I'd like a nude that compliments my skin, and not too sheer. No pearliness or iridescence. Should I go more towards pink, or peach, or grey?

Try Fairy Tailor instead. It's one of their gel ones. The best pinky nude I've ever found. Ballet Slipper is too sheer and the finish isn't great.

RoseAndRose · 13/03/2019 06:56

I thought it was meant to be sheer. And it is very pale, just makes fingernails look 'finished' - essentiallymclear but a bit nicer

according · 13/03/2019 12:08

Yes it is meant to be sheer but I find that means a really nice finish is harder to achieve.

Housewife2010 · 13/03/2019 14:29

I have it but much prefer Essie Sugar Daddy. It's very natural and clean looking but not as pale - I wore it on my wedding day.

Hoppinggreen · 13/03/2019 14:33

I like it but only when I want a “no nail varnish “ look
I find it goes on well and lasts too.
Chanel Ballerina is nice too

Deathraystare · 13/03/2019 14:44

People seem to go mad over this but I tried it (god knows why , really not my colour of choice) and it streaked whatever I did and no matter how careful I was. Reminded me of the Barry M Pastel colours which did that for a fraction of the price!!!

Gentlemanwiththistledownhair · 13/03/2019 15:35

Can you get to a big boots to look at the colours irl? I find holding the bottle next to my skin helps me judge whether it will give me the effect i’m after. As you can tell, essie have loads of nude shades!

Also have a think about whether you want a nude to match your skin tone or be slightly lighter or darker. All work imo, but give a different effect

Gentlemanwiththistledownhair · 13/03/2019 15:39

Oh and to help with your skin tone question, I’m caucasian, quite pale skinned but do tan easily and have yellow rather than pink skin tones. I prefer topless and barefoot, which does a good job of pretty much matching my skin

legolammb · 13/03/2019 18:40

I've been using this recently and love it. I have dark skin. Find the first coat sheer then second coat makes a lovely pretty soft pale pink. I've had 3 compliments on it which I've never had for a nail polish before!

GlitterPixie · 13/03/2019 18:45

I find it very streaky and pale I don’t like it even with multiple coats

cornflakes5 · 13/03/2019 18:47

I don't mind the sound of pale or sheer particularly, but nope nope nope to streaky. I do tend to load each brush heavily though rather than delicately daub, so perhaps it won't be so bad?

Going to a big boots and having a look IRL is the plan! Thanks everyone for your help so far.

This is the queen's favourite nail polish!
