Salon hair dye - how often?

I have v dark brown hair which is greying a bit, I have it dyed in a local salon.

My original "natural" colour is now too dark to suit my ageing skin so I have had it taken up a few shades, I like the colour now. However my root regrowth is starting to get a bit more noticeable now, it comes through as salt-and-pepper, against my lovely iced-cocoa 'do.

My hairdresser flatly refuses to do any highlighting instead of the whole-head job, as she says my hair is so dark, the chemicals would damage it badly. That's OK with me, I would rather get honest advice than have my hair wrecked.

I don't get on well with DIY at home, tend to wreck towels, stain sinks etc.

If you have your dye done in a salon, how often do you go?

I get mine done about 6-8 weeks depending on the re-growth. I have the roots done and the colour worked into the rest of the hair. My hair is in lovely condition and I pay about 70 for a colour and cut. I have very sensitive skin so I stick with what I know I can take, and have never used shop bought products except Toners in the '70s

I have my roots done by a mobile hairdresser every 4 weeks, works out much cheaper than salon visits. Same problem as you - dark hair, very visible roots very quickly. 4 weeks is not really often enough, should be 3 really. But I don’t want to have to be doing it every 3, it’s too much faff. The brown I have done is slightly darker than my natural colour, so I recently got fed up, used colour b4 colour stripper stuff on my hair and then dyed it a very light brown using a semi permanent. It’s probably closer to my natural colour and the roots are much less noticeable. I’m going to keep it up myself for now, see how it goes. Could you go another shade or two lighter?

Ooh, thanks both, that is shorter time than I was anticipating but I am OK with it. Time for another appointment methinks.
