Home hair dye help!

My hair is a mousy light brown colour with an increasing number of grey hairs so I've always had a half head of blonde highlights put through it to slightly lift it. I currently have about 5cm root growth at the top and I honestly can't afford to keep having highlights done. The rest of my hair (shoulder length) still obviously has the highlights in. My question is can i just put a dark blonde box dye over my whole head now to save the cost of going to the hairdressers for highlights? I'm really clueless about this so would really appreciate any help! Thanks Smile

OP how did you get on ?

Riddlediddle · 10/03/2019 10:16

I've used the Charles Worthing purple toning shampoo and conditioner today but in all honestly it's not looking any different. Think it may take a few washes before it has any impact. It still has that ginger tinge to it Confused

Be careful how long you leave it on for.

If my hair is looking brassy I use a purple shampoo and I often leave it on a bit too long. This gives me some lovely lilac highlights :-)

When I say I leave it for too long, for my hair that’s only 5 minutes. Yours might be different especially if it’s had a mix of colours on it

If your hair is orange you need a blue toner, not purple. You need the opposite colour on the colour wheel, blue for orange and purple for yellow.

Wella do a blue toner, Amazon usually sell it. T14 or 18 I think, you'd need to check.

This gives more info on the Wella toners.

I did look at a couple of blue toners in boots but they both said for brunette hair only so that put me off. Hopefully the purple will still do something to reduce the ginger tinge.

Trigger - i hear ya about the purple shampoo. I currently have light purple hands which were stained from just washing it into my hair!

Which dye did you use OP? And which shade?

Honestly in the picture it doesn't look so bad.

Riddlediddle · 11/03/2019 07:39

I went for the olia range because of it having no ammonia and it was dark blonde shade. Not sure what I need to use next time to stop this happening again. Maybe an ash one?

Definitely ash.

Try finola no orange shampoo(blue)
It works wonders!!! Leave on for about 20 mins. Or the brand in boots called "bleach london" ther silver shampoo is amazin (purple)
You need the opposite of whichever on the colour wheel so blue cancels out orange, purple cancels out yellow. Hope this helps x
