Highlights vs balayage

Are highlights 'out' now? Is balayage the way forward?

Had the former many a time but not tried balayage.

My understanding is that balayage is like highlights but doesn't use foils and instead of running the bleach from the top of the strands of hair to the tip, they start the bleach at different points in the hair across the head so it's kind of a deliberately uneven look.

Interested to hear perspective from those who have had both or those who work in a salon etc

Just curious.

I'd like to know this too. Have heard balayage is quicker to do also.

Love my balayage-I went from highlights to balayage and had the top matched to my natural colour with the bottom hand painted. Since then when I've had it done I don't need the top doing so that's left natural and just the bottom done. It is quicker, I love it as it is really low maintenance-it's only since I went shorter that I've had it done every 3 months purely to get the shape of the cut back but when it was long I had it done every 6 months and it still looked good.

Baylage looks better when growing out imo but it's really important to find a hairdresser that does it well as it can look rubbish if not done properly.

Balayage is much much lower maintenance. I get mine done three or four times a year when I was every 8 weeks with traditional highlights, it looks more modern too.

As a pp said, you need someone good though, when it looks bad it looks really bad.
