My mum is having a significant birthday soon. She wants to try a new perfume and has asked me to pick something a bit different.
I have up to £200 to spend and thought about getting her a brand that is not so ubiquitous. She currently wears either Estée Lauder Modern Muse or an Elie Saab one.

Has any one got any ideas along the lines of her current favourites but kind of upgraded

I don't know what the fragrances are like from the perfumes that you have mentioned. Because I am a creature of habit and have worn Chanel Allure for years. It's a little bit masculine ( I don't do sweet scents) but a lovely smell. It lasts for ages on you too. A large bottle is about £115. Good luck choosing, and I hope she enjoys what you get her.

Why not get in touch with a perfumery such as Bloom. They're sure to be able to offer expert help.

notacooldad · 03/03/2019 17:54

Thank you wouldmind my sister wears Allure.
I wouldn't want then clashing.

Bloom looks like a good idea, I hadn't heard of them. Thank you.

What about a day making her own perfume?

Check out 4160 Tuesdays:)

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 03/03/2019 18:25

Why don't you go shopping together?

Perfume is a very personal thing. No one here can tell you what she will like.

You can have a lovely afternoon smelling, and browsing and she can choose what she really likes.

There is a Percumista thread ongoing

With that budget I'd go for Dior Jasmin des Anges. It's heavenly, and quite unique.

With that budget I'd go for a Chanel Exclusif. They cost about that, but the bottles are big.
You'd need to test though, as they are all very different and it depends what notes she's into.
Mainstream noted ones include Bel Respiro and the new ones inspired by CC's trips, I like Paris-Deauville best.
34 Rue Cambon is a very classy chypre style. (That would be the sort of thing I'd look for for my mum tbh) Coromandel is amazing but not to all tastes.

4160 Tuesdays do perfume making workshops and sample sets but to me, the majority are oversweet/fruity so unless that's the sort of thing she likes...

You really need to take her sniffing!

QuaterMiss · 03/03/2019 18:48

I agree with pp, with that sort of budget it would be far better for your mother to be able to do the choosing herself. (Or, at the very least, to do the initial exploring and maybe draw up a shortlist from which you make the final choice.)

Another possibility might be a perfume subscription which offers samples of different perfumes each month. Great way to find out about unfamiliar things without commitment.

Tom Ford - Black Orchid

ChiaraMontague · 03/03/2019 22:53

For my MIL’s last birthday I got her a lot of samples of luxe brands, with the promise of a full size bottle of her favourite scent. She really loved trying them all - she sent me a message every day with her thoughts on the new fragrance, she adores the one she picked for this birthday and she has a shortlist of other scents she would like to try in the future.

Bluesheep8 · 04/03/2019 06:48

There are some beautiful sounding tom ford ones that are £100 plus and not 'mass market'

This. I had a Bloom subscription last year, learnt loads and now have a list of perfumes on my wishlist.

Jo Loves does a sampler set where you get a 100ml bottle of your favourite
