how much tip for a hair cut...

So my next door salon charges £20 or 35 for a hair cut w/or wo blow-dry and £30 for tint re-growth

I am always confused about the right tip amount if I do

  • hair cut for £20
  • Hair cut for £35
or
  • both haircut and regrowth - £50-60
  • or if I am just doing a £7 for eye brows, should I pay £1. I find too embarrassing to give a coin, so sometimes I give no tip.

Internet search results say 10--25%

Last year I did Yoko straightening for £450 and I wasn't very excited about paying £50-120 on tips. I had saved up money to do straightening for a long time.

I just want to get a general sense of what is expected.

thank you!!

I used to tip, but not anymore.

Greyhound22 · 04/03/2019 17:03

I've stopped tipping as well. I found a thread on MN and it gave me the confidence to. My stylist owns her own salon and has a nice lifestyle/car etc I don't see the need to add more on top of what she is charging.

trader21c · 04/03/2019 17:07

I pay £30 and tip £3 usually

Arnoldthecat · 04/03/2019 17:09

£12 hair cut for me and no tip. I rarely tip anyone. No one tips me.

trader21c · 04/03/2019 19:17

Maybe I should stop ... do they expect it??

chocolatespiders · 04/03/2019 19:24

This make me so anxious, whilst I am sat there having haor cut I watch people paying to see who tips to try and calm myself.
I didn't tip once last year but gave a fiver at Christmas! I really could not afford to do it all year. I spread my haircuts out a lot to save money!

certainlymerry · 04/03/2019 19:29

I have never tipped a hairdresser, ever. The prices are so high anyway, I don't see why I should tip on top of that. I am usually paying £80 to over a hundred for roots and a cut. To tip on top would make it ruinous.

Angelinthenightx · 04/03/2019 19:31

I tip £5 i just go for a cut & blow dry cost me £35 and then i leave £5 tip which is more than enough for a hours work.

StayingWithAuntySue · 04/03/2019 19:44

Always tip, especially the junior, mean not to.

NorthernGravy · 04/03/2019 19:56

I don’t tip the salon owner but do the salon staff.

GoFiguire · 04/03/2019 20:00

My hairdresser drives a RangeRover and has 3 foreign holidays per year. I’m skint. I don’t tip her even though she has a money jar with her name on it.

EdWinchester · 04/03/2019 20:05

I always tip. £10 to my colourist, which is probably not enough, but she charges a LOT. £5 to the assistant.

Arnoldthecat · 04/03/2019 20:06

People who own salons just like any other business, trouser a fair bit of the cash anyway. Why would i seek to treat them further?

BlueMerchant · 04/03/2019 20:10

If it cost £38 I'd give £40 and say keep the change but if it was say £35 I'd wait for my fiver.

itbemay1 · 04/03/2019 20:14

I always tip £5, my hair cut and colour is £35 so I just hover £40

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 04/03/2019 22:56

I pay £62 for a cut every five weeks at an Aveda salon. The stylists are paid a salary plus commission. I never tip, but I always buy my hairdresser champagne and flowers at Christmas, and if I go for a “free” fringe trim in between cuts I leave £5 for her.

Winenotttea · 04/03/2019 23:16

I always tip, usually £20 on top of a cut/ colour that’s cost me £120.
My hairdresser works really hard with my hair as I always want something really tricky to achieve. He never complains and I always walk out of the salon with a fab colour, even if I change my mind about it a few weeks later......
I can’t imagine not tipping but I guess that we are all different. I wonder if it’s a region thing? I grew up in London and moved to the Midlands a few years ago, my hairdresser is always surprised and grateful for the tip as not many clients do tip.

Redwinestillfine · 04/03/2019 23:21

I always tip. My cuts cost £53-7, I tip between £3 and £6 depending on what change I have.
