Jeans and a bloody top....

So have been invited to a birthday party for someone turning fifth, in a fairly smart hotel, nibbles and dancing. Dress code is jeans and a top. No idea what to wear... early forties, size 8 but rectangular - don’t go in in the middle since babies, 5ft 5 but short waisted. have some decent dark skinnies but clueless as to what to put with them to look decent and ‘party’ enough.

Help!

I tend to go for camisole tops or similar. River Island is good for going out tops.

Mominatrix · 27/02/2019 16:09

I'd also wear a camisole and a sparkly blazer/cardi on top

BusterGonad · 27/02/2019 17:01

I like Oasis for tops, there's generally something for everyone.

NigellasGuest · 27/02/2019 17:11

That's an odd dress code!

BuildAParsnip · 27/02/2019 19:17

Jeans and a top? How very noughties.

I'd probably go heels, skinnies, blazer and cami.
Or a dress/ jumpsuit/ skirt coz what are they going to do? Turn you away?'

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 27/02/2019 19:30

How about a nice blouse with your jeans?

Or a plain vest top tucked in/bodysuit with more patterned jeans.

What else do you wear on the upper half with jeans? Grin (light hearted)

PersonaNonGarter · 27/02/2019 19:55

No, that’s a horror of an invite. Wear a jumpsuit. Ignore the dress code.

Actually, I think the word ‘top’ should just be fucking banned. It just sounds so nylon.

BagelDog · 27/02/2019 20:52

It is the weirdly specific but non specific nature of it that is defeating me.... nice t shirt and my ‘posh’ trainers?? Or strappy heels and dripping in sequins... no idea. Might just wear a dress. Far easier!

Do it. Wear what you like!
Personally I've not gone out in jeans and a top for a long time (except the blazer, cami thing, but even then rarely)

Letthemysterybe · 27/02/2019 21:34

I’d assume that ‘jeans and a top’ just means what you would usually wear and feel comfortable on a night out. I.e don’t think too much about it!

Fujexa · 27/02/2019 21:36

Jeans and a top means the "going out" uniform from 15 years ago: nice, dressy jeans, heels, cami or similar top, blazer

Just going to leave this screenshot of New Look's "trending" page....

Maybe it doesn't literally mean jeans and a top - just that level of dressiness, like what you'd wear to a pub.

RockyFlintstone · 27/02/2019 22:05

I'm always baffled by the 'skinny jeans and a cami' I always see on here. I havent worn that combo for a good 10 years, and I don't think I have seen anyone else wear it either?

Blankscreen · 27/02/2019 23:17

Is it just intended as an indication as to the level of 'dressiness' as opposed to being prescriptive about what you can wear?

Anyway I would probably opt for a jump suit or a midi length dress. Not too dressy but not 'jeans and a top'

SurgeHopper · 28/02/2019 01:28

I'm sure you can just wear a dress

CountFosco · 28/02/2019 05:30

I don't think I've ever worn jeans for a night out! Wear whatever you want.
