Sore cracked hands

I started working in a warehouse in 2017 and have found that the manual side of the job coupled with the fact we have no running hot water in the place, only cold in the toilet and a water heater in the kitchen which gets very hot, my fingers have become very dry and cracked and I've now got a split. Even my finger tips dry and crack which means they catch on fabric etc. I handle a lot of dusty and dirty instruments so have to wash my hands a lot. I have hand cream on my desk and apply it liberally and when I remember, I use those white cotton gloves overnight, often slathering them with Vaseline. I'm thinking of keeping a stash of thin latex gloves at work and using them whenever I do the manual bits but can anyone recommend a really good hand cream? Wasn't that impressed with the O'Keefes pot.

You need this to heal and then bodyshop hemp handcream to moisturise

flapjackfairy · 22/02/2019 15:37

I always had this issue but using pure castille soap has solved the issue completely. You can buy it on line in liquid form.
There are chemicals in soap that dry the skin and so constant washing leads to cracked hands . I had suffered for nearly 50 yrs until I discovered this !

it's so painful having splits in finger tops! The only thing that works for me...it's to file it right down with a nail file and stick a plaster over it. The pain then goes away too, bizarrely! Have you tried using cream for cracked heels on your hands?

Freshstart40 · 22/02/2019 17:10

Locittaine Shea butter hand cream.....bliss!

Soonsoonsoon · 22/02/2019 17:14

The best thing I ever used on severely cracked hands was flexitol heel cream - it cleared them up in a few days

Janek · 22/02/2019 17:14

I like Neutrogena hand cream, although I have never had such extreme problems. I think pp might be on to something re the soap- we use friendly soap, which is only soap and no nasty stuff, it really doesn't dry my hands. Although thinking about it they also do a shea butter face bar - perhaps that would be good for your hands.

Try bar soap rather than liquid soap, it made a huge difference to my hands.

IHaveBrilloHair · 22/02/2019 17:16

I second flexitol heal balm.

Thank you for all suggestions! I have some Dr Bronner which I think is Castille? We already use bar soap for handwashing at work and I use it at home instead of shower gel. Will look into cracked heel cream, good idea! My hands are dreadful, dirt gets in the cracked bits so never look clean!

Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour cream is miracle stuff and works wonders.

ChesterGreySideboard · 22/02/2019 19:06

I work outside a lot and my hands crack in the cold.
Aveeno is what you need.

Kat772 · 22/02/2019 19:11

Snow fire available from chemists and Amazon is great for cracked fingers.

lotusbell · 22/02/2019 19:13

Lots of suggestions to have a go at, thank you!

Another vote for Aveeno, it's the best I've found.

Bodyshop hemp is also good (but smells a little odd).

If you use deep crack foot cream, be aware that 1) it may sting if you have a raw split and 2) you must avoid touching your eyes (it will sting!). I use Boots own brand on my feet and it's great.

Dalesgirl16 · 22/02/2019 19:16

I have dermatitis in my hands and use Cetraben to both wash and moisturise my hands. I get on prescription but you can bug over the counter, a big tub is £11 though

MrsCrankypants · 22/02/2019 19:29

I always have this problem too. I use Aveeno soothe and protect hand cream, it's the one with the blue stripe on the tube, not the green one. I find if I put up on before I go to sleep my hands are much better by morning

MissKittyBeaudelais · 22/02/2019 19:42

Aveeno Cream with Colloidal Oats (not the hand cream) sorted out my mum’s hands which had a flare up of psoriasis and were bleeding and cracked.

lotusbell · 23/02/2019 18:24

Got the Flexitol this morning and applied twice today. Can honestly feel a difference already, so thanks for all who suggested it. Have also got some Aveeno to try as well.

You can mend cracks with superglu, which holds the skin together so it can heal.

lotusbell · 23/02/2019 19:59

@Propolis, I daren't try that!!! Confused

Another vote for Aveeno. My GP recommended it when my hands were hot, sore, itchy and cracked due to what was probably an allergic reaction. It cleared the problem up, and I continue to use it every day. My hands are lovely and soft all the time now, and it's not too expensive.
