Sos please wise skincare boffins! I'm:

  • late 30s
  • combination skin (I think, had acne when younger, now I get slightly oily t-zone, dry patches and some blemishes)
  • using cetaphil facial wash morning and evening, after previously stripping my skin too harshly with abrasive products
  • using No7 balancing moisturer during the day (can't recall it's name) which seems to suit
  • using jojoba oil as a night-time moisturiser. Using an oil does seem to be a good thing, my skin is more supple and no lines yet!

But the jojoba is about to run out and I'm not convinced there isn't something better, a different type of oil or a blend? Mr skin still feels a bit congested at times, and I admit I opted for jojoba oil with limited research.

I can afford £20/30 but I can't afford to keep trying lots of different ones to find what suits so was hoping for some advice from the experts on here ☺ There just seem to be a lot to choose from!

I’m no expert but I too am late 30s with combination skin although more oily than yours sounds. I was where you were too - having used far too harsh products which ruined my skin. So I’ve tried to opt for more natural products if possible.

After doing some online research I concluded jojoba is probably the best thing to use. It’s the closest to the oils produced naturally. I use it as a cleanser. Massage it on and wipe off with a hot muslin. I also use it as a night moisturiser. It’s really improved my skin.
I’ve also tried the superfacialist vitamin c oil which smells lovely and feels more luxurious but I don’t think it’s as good for my skin.
The ordinary niacinamide used before makeup has helped with the oiliness and I’m thinking of getting some saylicic acid for blackheads but don’t think they are meant to be used together? It’s a bit of a minefield.
I really think it’s trial and error. What works for one won’t for another. And what works for you for a while may stop being as effective.
I hope you find what you’re looking for.

Thank you so much for replying KMoKMo I really appreciate your thoughts. Can I ask if you use it alone at night or also with a moisturer?
I hadn't thought of using it as a cleanser too, thanks I'll give that a go.
I'm wondering if I should stick with the jojoba oil but give more thought to the rest of my routine.

Coconut oil !

I use it as a hair mask and body moisteriser. Recently I’ve started using it as my first step in removing makeup. Once my my face is completely cleansed I rub a small amount in and then continue with my normal moisteriser on top

Yes I use it alone. I’ve also been bought the M&S beauty advent calendar for the last couple of years so now slowly working my way through a lot of the face creams. So if I don’t use the jojoba I use one of those.
I started off using coconut oil but it’s meant to be comedogenic so will block your pores. Lucy bee now does a skin care range which looks really nice and I considered.
I have found a difference in jojoba oils too. My preferred one is a bit thicker than others I’ve bought.
