Hairdressers - what do I want?

Usually a friend cuts my hair (hairdresser) but it's always a pain trying to get a convenient time for both of us. It's been nearly 12 months since my last cut. This is going to sound really sad but in the meantime my mum has trimmed the ends once or twice to stop it looking too awful but it's at the point now that I can't cope!

I usually have some long layers cut into it so it seems a bit more interesting as it's very very fine. Been trying to grow my hair too since I had it cut for my wedding (didn't like it) but my hair grows really slow.

So going to go to an actual hairdressers for the first time but what do I ask for when I book the appointment? Do I need it washed and dried? Will they think I'm cheap if I don't? My hair is super straight even if I don't brush it out after washing. So it won't need straightening etc

Sorry this seems like I've been living under a rock but help! Thanks Blush
