How to shrink jeans?

colaCOLAcola · 12/02/2019 19:03

How do I shrink jeans that are 97% cotton and 3% elastane?
I thought tumble drier but that seems to make them bigger after the initial nice snug fit. Does hot stretch the fibres?
Help!

I was going to say tumble drier ...

Have you tried a really hot wash?

colaCOLAcola · 12/02/2019 21:34

That was my next think to try but wondered if the heat from the tumble drier made them baggy then maybe the hot wash would too?

In the past people used wear their jeans in a cold bath to make them shrink to fit but that was pre lycra

Firstbornunicorn · 12/02/2019 21:41

I think it's actually a hot bath you wear them in...as hot as you can bear. Then, once the water has cooled, you get out and wear them until they've dried.

Hugely unpleasant, but you'll end up with a pair that fit you perfectly (allegedly).

I think I did hear something like that. Maybe Alice bear on this morning. Wonder if she's got a website? Hmm

This isn’t the 80s. You don’t need to sit in the bath anymore. Hot wash and hot tumble dry. Or just buy the right size. That works too...

colaCOLAcola · 14/02/2019 01:59

Wow @AlbertWinestein hadn't even occurred to me to buy the right size. All these years I've been buying a size too big and trying to shrink them Grin So glad there's helpful people like you around to share your wisdom.

They stretched in the tumble drier hence wanting to shrink them.

Washed at 60. Fingers crossed. May be a lost cause if the fibres are all ready ?melted from the tumble drier.

So, I’m not sure what’s weirder; Mumsnet emailing me to tell me there’s a reply to a thread I’ve never posted on or clicking on said thread to see a post in my name, that I’ve never posted on. Whichever, apologies for the rude reply @colaCOLAcola. In the words of Shaggy, it wasn’t me!

colaCOLAcola · 14/02/2019 06:06

Gosh that is very weird @AlbertWinestein. I also found it very weird to receive a rude reply about shrinking jeans 😂

Data breach continues?

@colaCOLAcola Or one of my teenagers being a dickhead on my computer....Blush Grin

banivani · 14/02/2019 14:31

I think you've got a bad pair of jeans to be honest. Where are they too big?

peachgreen · 14/02/2019 14:47

@AlbertWinestein Eek, there was a bug recently where people were getting logged in as other users... that's a bit worrying!

CannyLad · 14/02/2019 15:02

Unless they were very particular jeans they will have been 'sanforized' - a process that stops the shrinking that you get with shrink to fit denim. If you're interested you can read about it here www.heddels.com/2014/04/unsanforized-denim-worth/

The fabric will tighten slightly when washed, but will give again pretty quickly once they are on. Sadly you either need to wash them before wearing each time or sack them off and get some that fit better, and I mean the cut as well as the size.

Hello! Sorry to intrude. Could you forward us the mail at [email protected]? We'll take a look right away!

colaCOLAcola · 14/02/2019 20:33

Cannylad, that's what I thought. They are ok after one wash but they def get baggier as the day goes on. They are fine for everyday jeans but I wanted to wear them out out. They just don't look as nice out out cos the fit isn't as good.

Not buying any more just now, they are from my 'buying a size bigger post baby' haul. I'll just need to wait until I fit into my normal jeans. Only 10lbs to go 😬
