What's everyone's opinion on 'glass skin'

RockyFlintstone · 06/02/2019 21:17

So it looks like matte everything (apart from ridiculous highlight!) is out and glossy is in. I have seen lots of talk about 'glass skin' and on Instagram Katie Jane Hughes (who is so beautiful) seems to be the go to for this?

What do people think? I think KJH does make it look fabulous, but it looks like it's really difficult to get right and that most people who attempt it will look like they have dipped their face in a vat of oil. I don't know, I like a bit of powder to set everything, but I also quite like the dewy look.

If you go in for it, do you have any tips or advice about products or getting it right?

Eeew not a good look - covered in a sheen of sweat, which is totally acceptable when you've been to the gym or for a run but not when you're sitting at your desk at work.
In real life imagine the comments you'd get if you pitched up to a social event looking like that? It's totally bizarre.

I follow a make up artist called Sara Hill on Instagram, she has a technique that she calls “yoga skin” which seems to be very similar, but possibly slightly less oily looking.
I guess we’ll all be looking much shinier in the next few months!

lubeybooby · 07/02/2019 08:54

looks like she got a bit older and discovered matte stuff highlights every crease, so decided to try dewy but went a bit ott and ended up with oily

TheVanguardSix · 07/02/2019 08:59

You have to have the bone structure and NO lines or under eye shadows/bags to pull it off.

It’s a look that can actually make most women, in reality, look a) sweaty and b) tired/ dragged down.
It’s great if you have very even, smooth, taut skin, high cheekbones, and a smooth, wide forehead. How many of us have that? Not many.
But ANY lines, no matter how minuscule, will be emphasised.

When I was a model, eons ago, this was The Look. This dewy, glassy skin. It really worked beautifully in a well-lit studio or on a catwalk. But take it out into real life and it can go very wrong. Seriously, the best up-close and personal look any woman at any age should master is minimal make-up, minimal product. Clean and healthy. It’s better to see the real deal with a few unremarkable flaws than totally notice the caked on, oily or powdery products emphasising our little flaws.

Agree with PP, the Lisa Eldridge video on this is great. I too put my highlight on under my foundation on the back of that video. She doesn't look greasy, just dewy. She also uses powder down her t zone.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 07/02/2019 09:44

Not keen on that particular KJH look.

I saw someone yesterday who had a very shiny face, slightly orange-y and I suppose it looks really good in photos but it was very odd IRL.

Same way as a heavily powdered look doesn't work either.

sizzledrizz · 07/02/2019 09:54

I look like this by mid afternoon, with oil breakout. Job done.(I look atrocious)

FloofyDoof · 07/02/2019 11:14

Pre-tretinoin my skin looked like that by 10 every morning!

It will show every pore, crinkle and scar, because the light will reflect off of everything. I'll stick to sort of matte, with plenty of primer to help disguise the worst bits!

RockyFlintstone · 07/02/2019 11:15

I'm looking forward to seeing how this filters down into every day life amongst the young uns!

She looks like she needs a lemsip and a lie-down.

Bubastes · 07/02/2019 11:32

I aim for the lit from within glow. Not dipped in a chip fan glow.

meow1989 · 07/02/2019 11:55

Having a Google, looks like this started in Korea and some of the example images do look like the models skin is glass coated, not what I'd go for but very well done.

The picture above, not a fan, she looks like she has the flu.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 07/02/2019 12:06

I honk the most real way of going it is to mix a drop of hyaluronic serum with a drop of oil and use it this under you foundation or mix a drop of oil with the foundation which is more unpredictable.

Vintagewannabe · 07/02/2019 12:16

Looks sweaty therefore I acheive this most days Grin

itsbritneybiatches · 07/02/2019 13:20

Worse than contouring

Beautifullymixed · 07/02/2019 17:38

This look makes me want to reach for the blotting papers.
Far too oily looking, and makes me feel itchy.
I really want to blot her face....

HistoriaTrixie · 07/02/2019 17:57

Ooooh, no, not a good look. She looks like an Uncanny Valley type of waxwork.

I think KJH’s version is OTT particularly with the amount of eye and lip make up she’s wearing. The Koreans are clear skinned and dewy rather than greasy and their lips tend to be muted/stained. KJH is emphasing eyes AND lips instead of one or the other and so there’s too much competing imo

DontCallMeCharlotte · 07/02/2019 19:12

The fuck? I just googled and she looks like an extra in Contagion!

Grin

If I saw her, I would be pointing her in the direction of a bathroom/bucket.

Greensleeves · 07/02/2019 19:21

How the hell do these people avoid getting spotty? I've just started using night cream, deep wrinkle treatment and day cream (with thorough cleansing in between!) and my skin is breaking out because of the extra grease. God knows what would happen if I walked around with a wet-look patina, I'd look like a pizza within a week Sad

TinklyLittleLaugh · 07/02/2019 19:21

I noticed Cossette in the recent Les Mis on the BBC was very very dewy. I thought her skin looked fantastic.

If it stops my DDs doing that ridiculous contouring I’m all for it.

pangolina · 07/02/2019 20:43

Ohhh I don't like it. It looks like the makeup has melted and like it feels horrible. I like a dewy natural look but that is a bit far for me.
Mind you I'm not a fan of the overly made up, matte, contoured look either.

OHolyNightOwl · 07/02/2019 20:47

She just looks greasy.
I think this is a better example of what it is supposed to look like, but still too much for most people:

Dizzywizz · 07/02/2019 20:53

Just looks greasy!

whatswithtodaytoday · 07/02/2019 20:58

She looks how I look in summer after a day at work (except with fabulous bone structure). It's not a look I'll be going for intentionally!

Lisa Eldridge's tutorial is lovely. Heavy matte make up is very aging, but the sweaty look is not good.
