Serum and moisturiser

Can’t someone explain, as if to a child, the difference between a serum and a moisturiser?

Serum is usually targeted so vitamin C etc and more potent
Moisturiser is more generalised

Serums go deeper into the skin. Moisturiser pretty much stays on top and works as a barrier to stop moisture leaking out.
