I'm 58 size 16/18 not very tall, weight is all around my tummy and bottom. We go abroad in june, I feel uncomfortable in a bikini now too much flesh on show.
Should I get a swimsuit or swim dress. If swim dress any suggestions on where to buy.
Thanks for your help.

I'm loving the swimsuits/bikinis on the For Luna website - may have to investigate for my holidays.

I take the same view about swimdresses - they make you look bigger IMO.

MinesaPinot · 30/01/2019 09:33

Love the For Luna swimwear.

I tried on a swimdress last year, but felt it made me look bigger than I am. I rather like the swimwear in Tu (Sainsburys) and have picked up so good, retro style, pieces previously.

I have a lands ends swim suit that's very like the first link upthread, a retro halter neck style with small skirt. I love it as I felt covered and pretty. It is substantially made and has a great internal bra so that I also didn't have to feel on display if I got cold. I don't often need a swim suit and feel this one will probably see me out!

Unadventurous · 30/01/2019 19:19

I wear tank suits from Next. Look like tankinis but are actually swimsuits so keep everything covered up and in place.

BestZebbie · 30/01/2019 19:23

Be aware that if you actually want to swim, the skirt can trap air and flap about. I had a black one piece with a short skirt over it as maternity swimwear and in the water I looked like a fight to the death between an orca and a sea lion.

Rachel468 · 31/01/2019 01:29

Swimdresses make you look like you are self conscious about your body and draw attention to your size imo. The For Luna suits cover you up but still look good. Must check out lands end too.

LadyB49 · 31/01/2019 03:02

I bought a swim skirt to use with my swimsuit. I
A nightmare in the water and a nuisance out of the pool once wet.
Sold it on eBay soon as I got home from hols.

I'm 70 and wanted it to hide the groin/top of the thighs area. Honestly, you're better with a sarong.

Hunter007 · 01/02/2019 17:21

The Norma Kamali ones are gorgeous too but v. spendy. Never tried one on but be interested to hear a review!

SouthWestmom · 01/02/2019 18:05

They make me think of these from Fantasia on any sized woman. Mine made me cringe and age about twenty years when I wore it. This year I got a bikini top and swim shorts instead and felt so much better.

I had a swim dress but hated it when it got wet as it stuck around my stomach and legs in an unflattering way and was awkward to swim in billowing all about the pissing place.

What are the best ones to get if you have the mother’s apron affliction going on? Would love to swim but feel self conscious.

Hunter007 · 01/02/2019 20:42

@PaulHollywood - the ruching on the For Luna ones and I'd imagine Norma Kamali ones is great for hiding that. High waisted bikini pants are also good but the retro ones make my bum look MASSIVE

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 01/02/2019 22:04

Thanks Hunter 🙂 you are a 💫

Tankini top and board shorts

Looks sporty

PerfectPeony · 01/02/2019 22:12

The neckline on these are really flattering as is the tummy control bit. I got one years ago in a different colour and it’s the only one I feel comfortable wearing after having DD.

I like the dresses but I agree once wet it can get stuck to your thighs which is uncomfortable and draws more attention.

Oldraver · 01/02/2019 22:16

I bought a bright blue spotty one a few years ago and while I do love that it covers up the top of my legs and you can get away with not shaving bikini line, it is a pain and sticks to you when you get out the pool, so I think would be a faff in a water park.

So I think good for swanning around but no good when wet

Whatdoyouknowwhenyouknownowt · 01/02/2019 22:17

Not really for holidays but I just got a Speedo boy shorts swimsuit. Fantastic for no hassle about coverage.

Thinkinghappythoughts · 12/02/2019 10:59

I have a tummy problem too. I hate swimming costumes though. On me they are so unflattering that I want to cry. I will stick with my bikini and this swim dress that I bought from the states. I am trying to brazen it out and not care if anyone thinks I am fatty trying to hide. I think it looks so cute. www.amazon.com/COCOSHIP-Striped-Swimsuit-Skirtini-Beachwear/dp/B019RCXUAI?psc=1&linkCode=xm2&SubscriptionId=AKIAILSHYYTFIVPWUY6Q&creativeASIN=B01D2HPMB4&th=1&tag=mumsnetforum-21&creative=165953&camp=2025

Janeysmum · 12/02/2019 16:10

Those For Luna ones are gorgeous! Has anyone a discount code?

endofthelinefinally · 12/02/2019 16:26

I got a very reasonably priced tankini with shorts on Amazon. Much easier to deal with when getting changed, going to the loo etc.

Mymycherrypie · 12/02/2019 16:30

I have one from ASOS that is split to the waist. It is like those design your own dresses on top and the bottom is skater style. So not all of them are fuddy duddy.

Mymycherrypie · 12/02/2019 16:32

Also, I don’t wear mine to look smaller so I don’t care if it makes me look “bigger”. I’m cool with dressing what I have.

scrappydappydoo · 12/02/2019 16:39

I have this - www.decathlon.co.uk/loran-tankini-swimsuit-black-id_8388281.html
it’s a one piece and it’s very forgiving. I happily wandered around a water park in it without feeling self conscious.

purplepingu · 12/02/2019 16:58

George at Asda have some swimsuits with a built in skirt and tummy control. The black spotted one looks quite similar to the vintage styles already suggested and is less than £20?
