WHy did I ever give up black clothing?

I am currently sorting through my closet and decluttering etc.

Everything in black looks bloody lovely. I have wasted loads of money over the years trying navy, charcoal, beige etc. Nothing looks better than black frankly.

Anyone else having this dawning realisation? Have we been sold a crock for years?

You should have got black pets 😬

Re. The pp about everyone being in black dresses, I think it's because it's a go to 'safe' colour. Slimming and more likely to cover a multitude of sins! I don't wear black in the summer, although I do wear bright clothes as well as black in the winter.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 30/01/2019 16:14

Black suits only 1/4 of the population and even then its nit the most flattering colour to wear for any skin type. I have absolutely no black in my wardrobe after having my colours done by a consultant a few years ago and discovering that my colouring is a ‘spring.’

It’s only those with a ‘winter’ skin type who suit black and even then it’s better for them to wear navy, brown or grey as black has a tendency to suck all the colour out of you.

MikeUniformMike · 30/01/2019 16:19

twentypencemore, my xmas do had a lot of black dresses too. I wore an old dress in one of the colours you mentioned. I say old, it was old in terms of age but I still love it and still fit into it. I just don't look quite as nice in it.
I had singled out a black sparkly outfit and what I wore.
There were a few in jumpsuits, which was what I had planned to wear but didn't find the right one. At the party, I was glad that I hadn't worn one.
A black dress probably won't stand out but people won't realise it's on it's umpteenth outfit. A well cut, flattering LBD is a good choice.

TheHoundsofLove · 30/01/2019 16:53

I agree with PPs that it depends on the fabric/cut. No-one is going to look their best in black jeans, a black fleece and no make-up, but a beautifully cut black dress or well-fitting black trousers and a black silk blouse are another thing entirely. Add in make-up, particularly bright lippy, and lovely jewelry and it can look so stylish and dynamic.

I'm a warm skinned natural blonde, with greyish eyes so I can wear black and not looked ill. But if I try to wear a vivid lipstick with black it looks so harsh and unflattering, and makes my lips look thin. Because I was blonde with grey eyes I always assumed I suited cool tones but I've slowly realised that I suit a more peachy lipstick than pink.

LagoDiComo · 30/01/2019 17:59

I’d love to wear black as it’s classy and timeless not to mention slimming but it makes me look dead - drains all the life out of my face, makes my hair look dull and/or brassy, and highlights my lines and eye bags. Black looks stunning for those who can wear it.

BackBoiler · 30/01/2019 18:03

Although Vogue are saying head-to-toe beige is HUGE for 2019.

I have some beige skinny jeans in the wardrobe which I was thinking about wearing yesterday! I will definitely dig them out! Grin

Lucked · 30/01/2019 18:11

I am also adding black back into my wardrobe. I rarely wear black for casual wear so would pick a navy jumper over a black one but for a night out when I will have full make up and accessories black can look really chic in a way that is more difficult (but not impossible) with navy.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 30/01/2019 18:11

I never wear black (and l used to be a Goth!) it’s drains me completely.

Grey Burgandy and Navy are my base colours

Sonotkylie · 30/01/2019 18:47

Nothing goes with my furry leopard coat like black. Just nothing. I love them both. And I love cool soigné black in the summer too. Black is best. I do flirt with navy and charcoal a bit (because my husband prefers them and I am kind but not a doormat), but, beneath it all, I am loyal to black. And beige can take a running jump.

Sonotkylie · 30/01/2019 18:49

Oh and I have black pets too. I agree with matching your pet to your wardrobe. Dog hair is a fact of pet owning life. Make it easy!

expatmigrant · 30/01/2019 19:50

I dress in various shades of black and grey, which changes to khaky and pale grey and cream tops in the summer. When I see women my age looking good in bright colours, I feel like I want to try it too...but just don't seem to be able to do it.

Scandaloso · 30/01/2019 19:52

I love black summer clothes too. No day glo palm tree prints for me!

flowery · 30/01/2019 19:53

”I have some beige skinny jeans in the wardrobe which I was thinking about wearing yesterday! I will definitely dig them out!”

Is there a risk you might look naked from a distance....?

JaneJeffer · 30/01/2019 19:59

Grin I was at a football match and a woman a distance away had a beige vest top and I thought she was topless for a few moments!

EngagedAgain · 30/01/2019 20:34

Goodness yes, the amount of times I've seen someone in a beige top, the clingy type, and thought they were topless!

lololove · 30/01/2019 22:15

I love black! My problem is however dust! hairs/dust/dog hair and random bits always seem to get attracted to black tops when I wear them. Trousers/leggings/jeans aren't so bad (unless I sit on a throw over a settee as various relatives have over their seating and it leaves hairs and things from the throw behind.)

It drives me bonkers!

Notcontent · 30/01/2019 22:55

I love black too!

I am a “spring” and yes, I can see that certain beighter colours look good on me, but it’s so hard to get colour right and not look frumpy!

callmekitten · 30/01/2019 23:03

I love love love bright colors of all types and wear black, charcoal or chocolate brown with them to keep the brights from becoming to much. Beige makes me look like death warmed over so that is pretty much an automatic no.

Betty777 · 30/01/2019 23:24

Iv'e moved away from black (with age??) because I love colour and i'm just not keen on how most colours look when paired with black. Navy and grey are usually more pleasing to mix with I find.

Maybe it's because I wore so many cheap black clothes in my youth, they often look very blah to me these days

HeadHuntingMyself · 31/01/2019 06:37

I actually think all beige can look pretty stunning. I use to live in the heat and beige skinny jeans, top with natural leather accessories or red can look really polished. It has to be top quality beige though. I have Ralph Lauren skinny jeans that I got in the sale and they are ace.

OneStepMoreFun · 31/01/2019 08:43

I love black and used to wear it all the time. But mid-fifties I've realised from photos that it really does add ten years. Navy is softer. So if you can still get away with it, wear black. There may be a time when you have to give it up.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 31/01/2019 10:01

Even if some colour guru told me I'd be more suited to pastels (heaven forfend!)

Bloody hell! I'm with you there, Scandaloso.

If you'r going to wear a colour, WEAR A COLOUR! - not some sorry, pathetic, washed-out apology for a colour. Only tiny babies look good in pastel shades.

In the second Addams Family film (Addams Family Values, I think) - some homicidal sexpot married Fester for his cash and cut him off from the rest of the family.

Morticia visited and listed all of the dreadful things she (the sexpot) had done, after each one saying - "I can forgive that" eg "Luring Fester away from the family that loves him and imprisoning him is sexual thrall - I can forgive that" etc, then looks around at the decor and says - "But really? PASTELS?"

That is how I feel about them, too. Angry

SchadenfreudePersonified · 31/01/2019 10:06

I would have to dress like a kaliadascope unfortunately.

We have a blue dog (steel grey, to you non-doggy people). A black dog, a liver and white dog and an orange and white one. (And two orange cats).

Previously, I managed to have tortoiseshell cats and a calico, thus frugally encapsulating all the colours on almost a single animal. Now I am more munificent . . . .Grin
