WHy did I ever give up black clothing?

I am currently sorting through my closet and decluttering etc.

Everything in black looks bloody lovely. I have wasted loads of money over the years trying navy, charcoal, beige etc. Nothing looks better than black frankly.

Anyone else having this dawning realisation? Have we been sold a crock for years?

Makes me look thinner. What's not to like?

halfwitpicker · 29/01/2019 20:01

Fawn?
Shudder

I’m a winter and I adore black. Never feel better than when in black black black. Need to get my hair icy and lighter again though for some interest. Grown out my highlights and feel a bit drab in black right now.

mewan · 29/01/2019 20:07

I think bright winters tend to be brunette most often or often they have dark, cool black skin, but there are some who are blonde. It's about what looks good on you, not what you look like.

I have mid-brown hair, about the colour of tea seen in a glass without milk and pale neutral skin. Quite dark blue eyes. I look like I should be a summer, but I'm really not.

CountFosco · 29/01/2019 20:15

I suit black and have some but see too many people wearing black with colour that it does not go with. T&S said black could be worn with white, red, grey and chocolate brown accessories only. I'd add khaki, forest green, navy and leopard print (and camel) but basically they are right. All black or black with the right neutrals can look fab but it so often is just the lazy option and cheap black trousers and shoes with a brightly coloured floral polyester top that doesn't match is not a good look.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 29/01/2019 20:15

I'm a natural brunette but have gone an ashy bronde to cover my grey, and it actually seems to work better with my skin tone than when I was a dark brown. I think it 'lifts' the Black a little more.

Whilst I happily wear black head to toe most days I agree with no black coats. Also I mix up textures, so today was jeans with a knitted top and leather jacket. I almost always wear different colour shoes or boots. I'm currently living in a pair of pewter Sam Edelman black heeled boots and they are just the ticket for lifting an outfit.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 29/01/2019 20:18

These, for anyone interested. So comfy!

Nice boots, lady.

I wear black with colours, but they are always very clear, coolish colours, because those are the only ones I wear. This probably sounds mad, I test whether they are right by holding my hand against them in daylight to see if it makes the skin look younger and in better nick. It's less subjective than looking in a mirror at my face.

MiniTheMinx · 29/01/2019 20:32

I've always worn black.. My mother dressed me in navy as a baby. As a child I was always dressed in dark colours. I can't wear pale colours, I look ill.

Not sure what colouring I am, winter maybe? Not sure. I have very dark hair with a bit of red in it if the sun catches it, very dark eyes (they look black) and probably neutral skin, tans ok, green viens. Anyone have any idea? I'd quite like to try other dark colours and love green.....but it doesn't like me.

Scandaloso · 29/01/2019 20:33

Love those boots. Very much my kind of thing.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 29/01/2019 20:39

Been wearing the boots with a red midi leopard print skirt as well ( black top though, naturally!Grin)

Scandaloso · 29/01/2019 20:43

Oh that sounds fab! I haven't enjoyed a trend in a long time as much as I'm enjoying midi skirt and dresses.

Zombiemama · 29/01/2019 21:36

I love black clothes! Usually add a scarf for a splash of colour.

For those who wear black jeans alot how do you all keep them black-black rather than the washed out effect

mewan · 29/01/2019 21:43

Dylon do a washing machine dye (comes in denim blue and black) especially for faded jeans. I dye things a lot.

goodolddaze · 29/01/2019 22:01

Green veins- warm undertones. Definitely not a winter!

I would have agreed black is amazing up until around a couple of years ago - in my 40s now.

I wore black all the time and read somewhere once that you should wear colour (or neutrals, but not black) near the face especially. What piffle! I said to myself. Black looks amazing.

However, now I'm a bit older... it's too harsh. I can't wear black near the face unless it's a black polo-neck and that's because a black polo is iconic as such. The other thing I can comfortably wear in black is a cocktail/party dress but again, that's more because it's iconic and also usually have lots of jazzy accessories, and it's a suitably "evening-y" colour.

Black in the day is just so draining on a lot of 40+ complexions - even writing that sounds bollocks, but it's true. It makes me look washed out and highlights hollows, dark circles etc. I think it matches up with them! Grin I think it helps if you're a bright blonde or redhead as the hair colour lifts the blackness, but if you're a brunette or dark blonde, it can be really quite harsh for daytime.

SapphireSeptember · 29/01/2019 23:25

Hmm, I see lots of black. I do wear other colours (with black.) I have a large collection of long and short sleeved t-shirts in different colours, and I also own quite a few white skirts and dresses (Amy Lee made me do it!) but the rest of the time I'm channelling my inner Snape. (I am a Goth though, so it kinda goes with the territory. Grin )
Pastel colours make me look ill, beige makes me look dead. I own two pastel coloured tops which have Pusheen pictures on them, although I had some other plain t-shirts that I charity shopped once I realised how awful they made me look.

ComicsansHorror · 29/01/2019 23:56

I like black but black doesn’t like me, unfortunately. Navy, charcoal and light grey are better winter neutrals for me.

Also away from my face brown-black is excellent, which has been a revelation for me. That tiny bit of warmth from the brown tones in so much better with the rest of my neutrals and colouring compared to plain black. It’s hard to find in the shops though.

hatethinkingofusernames · 30/01/2019 00:08

Me! I have always been into colour, all my clothes, handbags and shoes are colourful. I have found out super recently that black is the one!!!! All those wasted years. I'm blonde so black looks a lot better with my hair than yellow, what was I thinking!

Floisme · 30/01/2019 07:08

I'm with Comics about brown-black. I have a 10-year old Hobbs top in a very, very bitter chocolate brown, about as near to black as you can get, and it makes my skin glow in a way that black never will. I've been looking for that shade ever since but even now, when there's more brown in the shops again, I still can't find it.

thebabessavedme · 30/01/2019 08:02

ugh beige - i always have a bad day when in 'beige', even the word depresses me.

TheHoundsofLove · 30/01/2019 08:05

I've gone back to loving black too. I agree that it looks stylish in a way that no other colour does. I'm a spring, so have avoided black for a while, but since I have grown out my highlights (natural colour is a light ash blonde with pure white 'highlights') I think I can get away with it if I add a bright lipstick and nails. But then, I am definitely at the cooler, stronger, more wintry side of the spring pallet - so also look good in cobalt, emerald and bright red.

dudsville · 30/01/2019 08:20

I can't wear black, white, cream or beige, pale colours, etc.. I'm locked into dark berry colours plus brown and dark grey. My wardrobe looks solemn.

Elledorado · 30/01/2019 08:27

I'm a winter with blonde hair and neutral skin. 90% of my wardrobe is black and I fucking love it, it just makes my eyes/features "pop" more (the high contrast thing?), especoally.when I wear blacl eyeliner on. I have to agree about bitter chocolate and very deep/dark navy though - they make my skin look better than black.

Elledorado · 30/01/2019 08:31

Typos sorry!! Especially when I wear black eyeliner that should say
