DD wants to wear a suit to prom.

She wants to look "cool". She hates dresses. Not interested in what other people think, she just wants to dress up and be comfortable at the same time.

Where can we look? Thanks.

Is she by any chance gay OP? I'm not sure about the waistcoat/braces look..

I'd encourage a chic suit like the Zara one, though depends on body type whether they'll look good, she'd probably need some heels too to pull it off if she's a little on the curvy side- they slim your legs, especially as suits (if long trousers) can swamp you.

I wore a tux once to a work James Bond party as I didn’t want to be a Bond girl - skinny trousers, bib front sleeveless blouse and tux jacket from H&M. I still wear the tux jacket frequently, super useful.

Surely your daughter can help with the search though? If she can go to prom can she not look through the usual websites? I’d also suggest charity shops - my husband needed a morning suit for a wedding and I managed to find one in a charity shop, she might find a black tie suitable waistcoat that way?

I would personally go for a midnight blue velvet flared suit.

Wore with something very slinky underneath.

toomuchfaster · 30/01/2019 11:03

Please get her to wear something underneath it! At a ball I went to, two girls wore very nice black suits with not even a bra underneath! One got very sweaty but couldn't take her jacket off, the other showed plenty of nipple when dancing!!

KiteMarked · 30/01/2019 11:15

I'll get her to look for herself, of course, but she isn't fashion conscious and doesn't know where to start.

Thanks for the recommendations.

I went to a formal occasion many years ago, and wore a tuxedo/evening jacket and slim formal trousers - hired from Moss Bros boys' section! Also got the black bow tie and white formal dress shirt to go. I'm sure they would have braces too.

MsSquiz · 30/01/2019 17:18

I think women look fab in a tailored suit! And well done your dd for going against the grain!

I would maybe suggest going for either a waistcoat or braces and a jacket. Just going off DH and our groomsmen at our wedding, DH and his best man had waistcoat and jacket, groomsmen had braces. The DH and best man changed to to braces for the evening do

A great look, if she's got the confidence to carry it off. You don't say how old she is though. 16 year olds might think it's pretty cool, 11 year olds not so much - she might get a lot of questions and teasing.

DD wore a tux (the Zara one Cathy&Clare linked to earlier) to her prom last summer, with a formal white shirt & bow tie then her oxblood DMs. She looked fabulous, and got so many positive comments.

I can definitely see black trousers / shirt / funky braces & waistcoat as a look (but I am a massive waistcoat fan). I've got a very fitted deep red suede waistcoat that I wear with black skinnies and a 'pirate' style shirt for a toned down steampunk look. Come to which - your dd might find something she likes on steampunk sites?

YummyMummy45 · 01/02/2019 22:22

My daughter wanted to wear a suit to her prom but we struggled to find a really good fitted suit with a quality cut as she is very slim.
We eventually found a beautiful jacket and shorts suit from Zara - everyone commented on her outfit and one of her teachers said she stood out from all the dresses and stole the show.

KiteMarked · 02/02/2019 05:27

Sadik can you recommend any good steampunk sites?

Cara Delevigne looked incredible at Eugenie's wedding, maybe that sort of look? Not sure where you'd find it though

DD has the tux from Zara, prom not till June but we’ve been looking for a while so grabbed it when it came out. Initially she just wanted waistcoat and trousers with really eye catching satin low cut shirt. Jacket completed the look.
We don’t have the shirt yet looking for it just now.

There’s lots of American sites will ship if you can be bothered with the faff of returning if it doesn’t fit. We’ve found a couple who made to order but they were £££. I’m hoping we’ll come in just around £200.

DD is petite and very slim and had seen a photo of V Beckham in a navy tux that she loved.

She has bought skyscraper Guess heels from TKMaxx and taking, if we can find one, a little satin Messenger bag with her brogues in it although she wore the heels to her Xmas dance and managed lots of Scottish Country dancing in them.

She will look fabulous as will your DD I’m sure. Good luck in your search.

Think it's a very cool look. Nice here with a camisole.

Would get it tailored to fit if there's plenty of time

Good question - ebay is good for not-too-extreme steampunk feel stuff Tokyosushi - Kate's Clothing and KinkyAngel also have some good things though you have to wade through a lot of Goth black.
