Calling all who dare dye their own hair

I am trying to save money this year. One of my main expensive outgoings is for colouring my hair. I've got a few grey hairs and like to keep my hair dark brown. Any advice on doing it at home would be greatly received as I haven't got a clue.

Do a Patch Test and a Strand Test

Bear in mind they always tend to turn out darker than the colour guide.
I have turd brown hair , if I use a 6.0 , I look like Shakin' Stevens .

I use a 7.74 (goldeny brown copper) to pick up my grey hairs but I really want to try the red wash in that Lady linked to.

I had used Pemenant in the past (but then you get the root groth) , Semi-Per fades nicely without regrowth being as obvious.
My last red attempt was mahogany pink, and unlike most red , it didn't fade

Just be aware that the colour tends to be a lot darker at first.

It faded quite quickly though!

I buy Inoa online and do my roots in between appointments. Like Madison I've got a brush, developer and a mixing bowl. I find it much better than the box dyes.

The best one I found for my stubborn ginger/odd grey roots was the Schwarzkopf Poly Colour Tint around £2 in Wilkos and Asda and I think Poundland & B&M also sell it. It was the only one that actually covered my roots, I used either Natural Brown which was a nice neutral brown or for a darker brown use Medium Brown, which is also a neutral brown, both don't really have any red tones to them, which is a change. They don't come with conditioner so just use your own.

I would honestly go for medium ash/cool brown, because dark brown box dyes come out just about black and look really harsh.

I buy Schwarzkopf igora online. It’s the best I’ve tried so far. Previously used majirel and wella koleston.

can i use any box dyes on highlighted hair? i am mousy brown and have bleach highlights on half head.

I always use nice n easy, get loads of compliments on it. I you have medium-long hair use two bottles as it can go patchy if you miss it. when it grows out you can just use one bottle and apply to roots and blend down to half way (instead of colouring the whole lengths again) or just get the root touch up which does the T section to keep you going.

I have always used nice and easy with no probs, but if you Google 'Mumsnet Majirel' then there are loads of threads about what to buy, how to find the right colour, bases and tones etc if you wanted something more in depth.
