How to look better - ginger hair

Since being a teen I've died my naturally ginger hair dark but recently had it stripped and I'm back at my natural colour .

I'm finding it difficult to look half decent without caking myself in makeup - I don't have a lovely creamy complexion but I'm also not freckly enough to embrace it ! I have pale skin with random red blotches and a few light freckles , my eyebrows are very pale and almost non existent and I have huge bags under my eyes . When I do wear a lot of makeup I look like a drag queen and when I wear minimal makeup I still look rough and a good ten years older than I am !
Skin care wise I use simple face wash and Bobbi Brown face base as a moisturiser . Has anyone got any tips please , preferably on a budget as I have 4 young children !

Thanks for the links !

@Ollivander84 you look amazing and have skin tone pretty close to mine ! Plus you have the whole rockabilly thing going on which is something else I struggle with now I don't have dark hair !

I'm not sure if this will work but I'll try to post a pic of me with dark hair , one with ginger hair and makeup and one without makeup so you can see how much older I look with ginger hair !

I think your red hair is beautiful!

Wheeesht · 25/01/2019 18:04

Ollivander I've just seen your bum! Grin

Ollivander84 · 25/01/2019 18:05

I don't think you look older at all. I get the washed out without makeup though!
Couple of things I use without fail - this is my absolute bare minimum Blush

Concealer under eyes
Liner on top waterline
Mascara
Brow gel
Blush

Ollivander84 · 25/01/2019 18:05

@Wheeesht Grin its a very blurred bum!

Wheeesht · 25/01/2019 18:05

OP I don't think you look older with the red hair.

EeeByeGummieBear · 25/01/2019 18:07

I'm a redhead, and I wear lots of 'autumn' colours. What I've found is that it's not so much the colour but the shade, so lots of testing out! For example I can wear red, but I need to be careful or it can look horrible. My personal favourites are burgundy and teal, band I like mustard as well. Good look finding what suits you.

villainousbroodmare · 25/01/2019 18:08

You're lovely! I have similar colouring but more freckles. I tint my eyebrows and eyelashes, and always wear a bit of light fake tan. I also use a pen eyeliner to tightline my upper eyelash line and then blend it out a bit. Blusher might be a help to you; on some people it is transforming. Clothes-wise, turquoise and burgundy are my best colors.

Wheeesht · 25/01/2019 18:12

Ollivander I think your makeup is better than the makeup on the Instagrammer you posted. She's a gorgeous woman but woah, she needs to step away from the highlighter!

Iwantdaffodils · 25/01/2019 18:20

I think you look best with your own hair colour and make up. You certainly don't look older.
I envy people with any shade of red hair. It's gorgeous.

Orlandointhewilderness · 25/01/2019 18:37

I'm a redhead! No help here though, I've been wearing the same makeup (benefit primer, tiny bit of ivory foundation, mascara and boring eyeshadow. Plus what ever tube of lip gloss I've got!) for donkeys years and have NO idea how to properly 'do' makeup!

Watching with interest..!

Orlandointhewilderness · 25/01/2019 18:39

Ollivander you have a gorgeous figure.
That model is beautiful, but is she meant to shine!?!?
What is highlighter!?!

Wheeesht · 25/01/2019 18:42

Highlighter is a makeup product that's meant to give you a kind of lit from within glow. But some people, like that model, pile it on so much that they resemble the tin man from the Wizard of Oz.

Orlandointhewilderness · 25/01/2019 18:43

Cheers! I'm not sold on the glowing look really...!

Kitchenstar · 25/01/2019 18:49

@Orlandointhewilderness can we see a pic ? I'm curious now to see how differently people do their makeup and what looks good on different shades of red hair

Welcome back to the world of RED! I spent years dying mine lighter (it's naturally a shade or two lighter than yours so that seemed the sensible direction to go).

My routine goes;

  • Green tinted primer
  • cream bronzer under my cheekbones
  • blusher on my cheekbones
  • light, translucent powder all over
  • light golden highlighter over my cheekbones
  • light brown eyelash pencil (I use Yves Saint Laurent no. 3) to fill in my otherwise invisible eyebrows
  • Black mascara
  • if I'm going out I might also do a smoky eye with a mixture of cream and brown shadows. I don't use eyeliner as I think it is too much with my fair skin, but I occasionally use a little dark brown eyeshadow under my eyes in its place, it's a softer look.
lrh3891 · 25/01/2019 18:54

As to clothing...I wear pretty much any colour- like a PP pointed out, it's more about the shade. I love the red you're wearing in that second picture, it really suits you. Autumn colours for the win! But also I wear a fair bit of black and quite a lot of pink. As long as it's more on the pink/purple side and less on the coral/orange side, it's lovely with red hair.

pouraglasshalffull · 25/01/2019 18:56

I would make your hair a really vibrant ginger. Schwarzkopf do a vibrant dye and when I see other people with very vibrant ginger hair they look incredible even without makeup. I LOVE ginger hair!! Your hair is lovely and thick too, maybe investing in some rollers and making it really bouncy and shiny would look incredible. Google image search bright ginger hair if your struggling to visualise!

turkeyboots · 25/01/2019 18:59

I'm a red head, and had my colours done last year. Reds and yellows and oranges are apparently my best colours, which I really had never considered before.

Make up wise I have my eyelashes and eyebrows tinted every 6 weeks. Makes such a huge difference and wear little other make up now. Gives my face much needed structure.

minkies11 · 25/01/2019 19:00

Hi @Kitchenstar - I think you look younger with your natural hair! I have the same hair colour and skin tone (am prone to blushing which I bloody hate) and struggle sometimes with clothes colour. However I have decided to embrace the Mustard craze and have ramped up the copper in my hair. Live the dream as a redhead!
The only colours I totally avoid are red and pink.

Jewel colours.
Maroon, dark green, navy, black, grey, purple.

I can wear hot pink, but I think that's unusual.
