Double cleansing - what's it all about?

I've seen a number of mentions of this on another thread. Does it work better than a single cleanse? I use Simple and a flannel at night and in the morning. What's the "double" bit I should be doing please?

Theory is, you use an oil based cleanser to remove make up and spf and then another creamier or milky cleanser to cleanse your skin afterwards. Only at night though, no need to double cleanse in the morning.

My skin has really improved double cleansing, i have combination skin ( previously on roaccutane and still prone to congestion) and have found the oil cleanse improve this, I really wear foundation now just a bit of powder.
I don't use anything fancy the currently oil I'm using is an Superdrug own brand followed by marks and Spencer's hot cloth cleanse.

It's not for everyone. My skincare routine is just using a face wash. I don't use a lot of products.

Its definitely improved my skin.

Oil-based cleanser, then a water-based cleanser (other people might use something else at this step), then a hot cloth. And then moisturiser.

Is double cleansing just really for people who wear make up? I only really wear mascara and eyeliner, and as I don't have lots of products to take off my face I'm wondering if there is any point? Should I just make sure I do it on the rare occasions I wear foundation etc?

It's for getting us all to buy more products...

Ollivander84 · 27/01/2019 13:28

For me it depends. Double cleansing can also be as simple as removing eye and lip makeup first then another cleanser for the whole face which I do every day

Then there's the times where I'm wearing SO much makeup - I'm talking layers of DW plus powder plus setting spray! When I need to remove eye makeup, lip makeup separately. Then I use a balm to break the makeup down, and then a cleanser to actually clean my skin. Clinique take the day off balm is my go to when I have about ten layers of makeup on and I can see the makeup running off into the sink Blush

Double cleansing is really for makeup - first you remove the makeup, then you cleanse. For instance you use a makeup wipe first then a hot cloth cleanser. I don't bother if I've not worn makeup that day, but it really does benefit your skin. You'll be surprised how much extra comes off on the second cleanse. Also you don't need more products, you can just use what you have twice.

I've been struggling for a while with terrible acne. The dermatologist I saw gave me a list of (reasonably priced) products and said take makeup off with Micellar water then use La Roche Posay cleanser. I suppose this is double cleansing and for the first time in years my acne is a lot better so I think it must work!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 27/01/2019 14:46

Mostly it's to sell double the products.

TheDowagerCuntess · 27/01/2019 14:51

And the people that it works well / makes a difference for, are quite happy to buy double the products.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 27/01/2019 14:54

Fair enough.

whymewhyme · 28/01/2019 20:27

Can anybody recommend a oil cleanser?

Ollivander84 · 28/01/2019 20:39

@whymewhyme I really like the Clinique take the day off balm. Goes on solid then melts and you can emulsify it with water

lottieleo · 28/01/2019 21:00

Heimish all clean balm
similar to the Clinique balm

Trilogy Rosehip Transformation Cleansing Oil

Ollivander84 · 28/01/2019 21:06

Ooh yes forgot the heimish one! It's pretty cheap too
