How to style a very long dress

I recently bought a very long dress from M&S and I love the print and fabric but I have no idea how to style it. It's a lot of checked fabric and very long! The model on the website wears it as a top and open from the waist down with jeans and trainers. I'm only 5"5 so I don't think that would work for me. I'm tempted to have it taken up but I don't want to ruin something that could be really cute and different. I'd appreciate any style tips! :)

Could you post a picture of it op?

Without seeing a pic, I think worn as a dress (ie not with jeans) and white pumps might work?

With ankle boots usually looks good for long dresses in winter. Also a leather jacket if that's your sort of thing. Long dresses look best with a shorter jacket or at least no longer than hip length unless you're tall & willowy, it's hard to pull off long dress plus long coat. Some long cardigans could look good, or a belted long cardigan, but long layer on top plus long dress can look too Victorian (not in a good way).

I really couldn't be doing with all the fabric of jeans and a maxi dress together, urgh they'd stick all the time as you were walking around!

If you love that look of trousers with unbuttoned dress then I'd probably wear it with black legging (slightly silkier ones), a black longline vest and sandals in spring, or white Converse type trainers, and a denim jacket.

Thanks for the suggestions so far! Here is a link to the dress.

Having seen it I’d say boots and a leather jacket now and into spring (with thick tights or leggings so you don’t freeze).

Spring-summer i would do brown sandals or trainers if I was cool.

But I’m very uncool.

I think it would look nice with long boots and tights, biker jacket or denim jacket if warmer (!).
