It's a really big occasion for me (professionally). Need a nice cocktail dress that everyone else won't be wearing - trying to avoid Coast / Karen Millen / Reiss etc. I don't know much about clothes these days. Anyone know any hidden gems or amazing brands?

I alway recommend The Fold for professional occasions - you could try them?

What style do you want? Could you go to a wedding dress shop and try on some prom / bridesmaid / evening gowns?

I was in a charity shop today where they sell wedding dresses, and their selection of cocktail dresses, and evening gowns was incredible.

Another vote for The Fold - I love them!

I swear by www.theprettydresscompany.com/sale-c16# for plain colours great quality. Similar to The Fold.

I was going to suggest the Fold too. It’s possible that something from Winser London might fit the bill? www.winserlondon.com/

Thank you for suggestions. I've just read the info of where I'm going and it's black tie. So need a cocktail dress. Short (have ok legs) but some sort of sleeve (arms very ropey!)

That second John Lewis one - the Adrianna - is beautiful! Wish I had a big occasion coming up I could justify buying it for 😉
