Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation - what am I doing wrong??

TellerTuesday4EVA · 19/01/2019 18:56

After seeing people rave about the double wear foundation for years I succumbed & bought a bottle, I'd normally go for a high street one from Boots or somewhere, never the same brand I just tend to pick whichever one I fancy or has an offer on.

I've tried it several times since I bought it & I just can't get it to not look 'caked on' I've tried various application methods... blending sponge and brush & tried a very little amount to building up but it always looks far to thick??

I too treated myself to double wear, and had it matched on my skin first and thought it looked good. My issue is I find it looks quite oily/greasy..I have dry skin and I am used to matte foundation and I think that’s the problem. I use it with either a beauty blender or a stipple sort of brush, and find once my bronzer/highlighter is on it looks okay. Definitely not worth the money in my case though.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 19/01/2019 20:27

It's awful stuff. If you like the full made up look, then fine. Otherwise give it a swerve. You can see a double wear face coming at a distance.
I was v impressed with the YSL touche eclat foundation though. Still heavier than I'd usually choose but so smooth and glowy on.

YoSoyLaPrincesa · 19/01/2019 20:31

It's terrible. No7 and even cheaper brands such as Bourjois do much better foundations in my opinion. Doublewear magnifies my pores and seems to highlight all the flaws in my skin - the exact opposite of what it should actually do!

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 19/01/2019 20:32

I got a sample first and yes it looks caked on. I have quite a red complexion so I do like it but I tend to only use it on my problem areas mostly my cheeks and use my cheap foundation on the rest of my face.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 19/01/2019 20:34

It's what it is, full coverage foundation.

Can you try to sheer it out a bit, with a drop of facial oil or a bit of moisturiser?

Richlyfruited · 19/01/2019 20:38

I love DW apart from their dodgy colour matching! I use it over the summer months when it works better with my skin tone and always use a beauty blender to apply. You have to be quick with it though as it dries really quickly! You could also mix it with a bit of moisturiser or primer to thin it out and get a more even coverage?

whymewhyme · 19/01/2019 20:40

I posted on here a while ago about Estée Lauder dw, I fad a really damp beauty blender works and/or a tiny bit of moisturised added helps loads!

MissSusanScreams · 19/01/2019 20:40

It is definitely for those who want the cakes on look.

I tried during for my wedding make up investigations. And even done by the consultant it looked caked on and practically made my skin itch.

In the end I went for the Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua. I don’t wear foundation regularly so it has lasted for ages. Would highly recommend.

pongopig · 19/01/2019 20:45

I moisturise and put primer on then apply it while my skin is still damp from the moisturiser. I use a small amount, rub between my fingers so that they are covered and then apply in sweeping motion from nose out to the edges of my face. Keep blending with fingers to avoid tide marks. I really find it is not caked on when I do this.

whatswithtodaytoday · 19/01/2019 20:50

A very light hand and a damp beauty blender. I have oily skin and love it in summer when other foundations just slide off my face. I do tiny dots and blend, blend, blend.

TheTroutofNoCraic · 19/01/2019 23:03

I mix it with a blob of liquid highlighter (a cheapy Bourgois one) before applying with a brush and it looks good. If I put it on straight then I find my pores look huge and it cakes in places. Won't be repurchasing after I use this bottle up....much prefer YSL Touche Eclat cushion foundation

ginyogarepeat · 19/01/2019 23:13

Get the light version - it's fab!

housewifeoflittleitaly · 19/01/2019 23:17

As pongo said.. use your fingers. This should make the difference. Although it is a heavy foundation, don’t mix it.

TinyMarie · 20/01/2019 06:31

I have bad scars from years of acne and redness and I would not use Double Wear if I didn't have to! It is thick and cakey but I need the coverage and longevity and am on the hunt for an alternative. If I had better skin then I would definitely use an alternative.
I've found mixing a few drops of MAC Face & Body in with it gives a nicer finish, less caked on finish. Maybe the the lighter version also if you don't need the coverage.

BusterGonad · 20/01/2019 06:39

The Estée Lauder make up specialist for the brand suggests adding a drop or two of Estée Lauder advanced night repair, so maybe add some drops of your favorite serum into it. I have it and have worn it a handful of times, not sure why I wanted it so much? Was feeling a bit down and felt like a high end purchase! Confused I'm pleased with it but I do live in a very hot and humid country. So for me it last the day/evening.

Domino45 · 20/01/2019 06:51

I mix double wear foundation with the double wear water fresh nude as the other one is very runny & light coverage. Not a cheap thing to do given the price but I find it looks less cakey. As suggested maybe try mixing with a dewy foundation

donajimena · 20/01/2019 06:57

I've got Vitiligo on my face so I bought it as it was recommended. I've found the trick is to use it where you feel you need the coverage and blend it out from that area. For me thats my cheeks and around the nose.

SnowWhite33 · 20/01/2019 07:17

Its great if you need solid coverage for problem areas, i used it for years in my 20s . Then i switched to double wear concealer for problem areas only and CC cream, its so much better

BiggFactHunt · 20/01/2019 08:26

I had the same problem, I bought it last month and I’ve only just this week managed to get it looking right.
I’ve ditched the beauty blender, wet or dry it looked cakey.
I now use the Real Techniques Expert Face Brush and do a thin layer all over and then where I need more coverage I pat it on with my finger and let it dry and then do another layer with my finger on cheeks and nose until I’ve got the coverage I want.
I find you can’t really spread and blend like other liquid foundations, patting it on into the skin works the best for me.

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 20/01/2019 10:49

Oh no I'm sad to read this thread! I'm about to treat myself to my first ever bottle of this for my birthday and reading all these comments has put me off. I need a heavy coverage as I have horrible blemishy skin and a touch of rosacea on my cheeks. Damn

Kescilly · 20/01/2019 10:57

It’s going to look like a full coverage foundation since that’s what it is. If you don’t need full coverage, you’re better off with a lighter foundation. Personally I have to use DW and mix in something even heavier to get the coverage I need. I haven’t found anything better (that hasn’t been discontinued).

CoffeeTableBook · 20/01/2019 11:00

Double Wear is the only foundation that stays on all day.

Everything else I use has vanished by midday!

Kaykay06 · 20/01/2019 11:01

I like it, I don’t use it every day but it’s great for nights out but I’d second Chanel or ysl foundation for daily use though expensive. I did love my benefit playstick but didn’t realise they discontinued them so am gutted as that was my fave. I prime my face/skin well with moisturiser and a luminous primer so it doesn’t look so cakey and use less than you think you’ll need.

SorrelForbes · 20/01/2019 11:07

I find the DW too heavy so use the Double Wear Nude Water Fresh instead. It's much lighter and gives a really natural look.

Ellapaella · 20/01/2019 11:09

I mix mine with a bit of The Ordinary foundation and it's perfect. It is quite a thick foundation and I find I can't wear it everyday or I get spots.
