Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation - what am I doing wrong??

TellerTuesday4EVA · 19/01/2019 18:56

After seeing people rave about the double wear foundation for years I succumbed & bought a bottle, I'd normally go for a high street one from Boots or somewhere, never the same brand I just tend to pick whichever one I fancy or has an offer on.

I've tried it several times since I bought it & I just can't get it to not look 'caked on' I've tried various application methods... blending sponge and brush & tried a very little amount to building up but it always looks far to thick??

I always wore high end foundations and loved my DW for years and then it started to look cakey. I think my skin changed and I started having to look for a new one. I spent a lot of time in the chairs at make up counters, a lot of money trying to find one that I loved as much as DW when I first started using it. I did lots of online research and Maybelline Suoerstay got really really good reviews. At nearly a quarter of the price of DW I was happy to give it a go and I love love love it. It stays all day, gives me full coverage but doesn't cake on me like DW ended up doing.

Back to your DW, have you tried applying it on top of a serum. Aldi has a great one

Starlight90 · 20/01/2019 13:57

Surely if you have to mix your foundation with something else you’re not using the right one?

justasking111 · 20/01/2019 14:00

OP has not told us how she is applying it?

HildaZelda · 20/01/2019 14:04

A damp beauty blender and sort of 'bounce' it on, if that makes any sense.

Biologifemini · 20/01/2019 14:04

I think it is meant to be diluted 1:3.
Have a look at people who wear it undiluted - it invariably looks awful in daylight but ok at night.

Bananacentral · 20/01/2019 14:08

Add a couple of drops of facial oil or if you have it EL advanced night repair.
Loads of moisturiser underneath if your skin isn’t too oily.
It is supposed to be super full coverage so it’ll never be natural/glowy....

MustBeThin · 20/01/2019 14:10

Anyone that needs full coverage without looking cakey, have you tried Nars Radiant Long wear foundation? I used to use DW because it was the only thing that would cover a major rosacea flare but it just ended up making my skin worse because it dried me out. Nars is BEAUTIFUL and full coverage without making you look dry and crusty 😂 you look radiant. Also pumps out little tiny pea size blobs so you can manage how much you want without wasting any.

sunshineandshowers21 · 20/01/2019 14:12

i used to use double wear because i have some acne scarring on my cheeks that no other foundation would cover. however i then found make up revolution stick foundation which is £5 and honestly one of the best foundations i have ever used! i’d definitely give it a try if you’re struggling with double wear.

olympic19 · 20/01/2019 14:14

I had the same issue so switched to Double Wear Light. It's much better!

MyNameIsJane · 20/01/2019 14:15

I’ve noticed that it sits in my pores now. I bought a foundation brush which (like a previous poster says) I stipple on and then blend. It used to be perfect for me too and I don’t know what happened. I did get the lighter one. Similar happened when I applied using my fingers. I think is because I’m used to applying a cc cream which melts into my skin as a daily routine.

Sunny1990 · 20/01/2019 14:17

Love double wear!! BUT unless I’ve exfloliated and used the specific moisturiser (just the Nivea day cream), primer (clarins beauty balm) and brush (real techniques foundation brush), it looks caked on and patchy on my dry pale skin.

Tbh I think it’s the same with all foundations, more about getting the skincare underneath right first!! People are surprised when I say I wear double wear!

Notajourno · 20/01/2019 14:39

It took me ages to get the knack of applying it. But when I got the knack it looks great and stays put all day. This is what I do:

Moisturise
Matifying primer
Concealer
Tiny bit (the size of a skittle sweet) on to the back of my hand
Put on face with clean foundation brush - not blended just slapped on with limited coverage.
Then blend with fingers.
Finish with a setting spray rather than powder.

Ellapaella · 20/01/2019 14:48

Actually loads of people mix foundation. It's a good way of getting a nice blend and perfect colour match. I asked the question on Mrs Gloss a while back and got loads of replies from people who said they also mixed different brands.

justasking111 · 20/01/2019 15:02

I use Elizabeth Arden flawless finish but put a dollop of L`oreal liquid on it, mix with brush apply then use egg sponge to even out.

Starlight90 · 20/01/2019 15:23

I just dont see the benefit of buying 2 foundations to blend. Just buy one that suits. I see it as false economy.

Kismett · 20/01/2019 15:44

I’ve never been able to find just one foundation that suits, unfortunately. The only time I did is when I used a custom blended foundation.

I find that I have to blend multiple foundations for coverage and to match my skin tone. It’s time-consuming, but I’ve been doing this for decades now despite repeatedly searching for something better.

Conseulabananahammock · 20/01/2019 15:48

Revlon colorstay is supposed to be a edw dupe. Comes in 2 types. One for Normal to dry and one for combination.
I use it and its amazing.
Tried edw and couldn't get along with it

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 20/01/2019 16:14

I usually have at least two foundations on the go, need different shades throughout the year.

Sometimes I mix because of the shade, sometimes I mix because I want the right coverage, depending hlhow good my skin is .

YellowStickRoad · 20/01/2019 19:52

I don't like DW either. It just looks caked on and unnatural ime. Lancome is much better and more dewy and glowing.

Somewhereovertheroad · 20/01/2019 20:12

The assistant who sold it to me said you need to put it on straight after your moisturiser. It needs to go on when your face is moist. Otherwise it will look caked. I put it on straight after Flash balm.

Oct18mummy · 20/01/2019 20:15

I mix mine with primer

Wallabyone · 20/01/2019 20:35

Ive just bought my third bottle, it's the first foundation I've liked and stuck with and it does look good once you get the application right. I agree that you need to work quickly over moisturised/primed skin.

sammy891 · 20/01/2019 21:37

I've just recently thrown away my bottle of DW, it just doesn't look flattering on me. I've tried mixing it and using it after primers, moisturizers, nothing makes it sit evenly. Like another poster said I also switched to the Maybelline Superstay 24h foundation and that is miles better, light feeling but covers amazing. I read somewhere that the Maybelline is a similar dupe to Fenty and Huda foundations.

redredvino · 20/01/2019 22:20

Applying with a damp beauty blender is your friend here. If especially dry mix with a little or Mac face and body.

user1497787065 · 21/01/2019 05:20

I think it's fab. Nothing covers and lasts like it. I agree that it only reflects what's underneath it. So a good cleanse, tone, exfoliate, moisturise and prime before application results in a perfect finish. Use a brush to apply and blend, blend, blend. A little goes a very long way. I think anyone who says it is cakey isn't moisturising or priming well first.

I use it everyday and have done for twenty years or so. Persevere with it and you will grow to love it. No other foundation measures up!
